DETAILING ADVICE NEEDED

Post by robinalex »

Hi folks, its obvious you guys spend a lot of time on your lovely cars and I do too but I am looking for some advice to try and speed up the washing process at this time of year. I have a black GTS and live in an area where the water is really hard. Every time I wash the car I have to dry and then polish or it gets white water marks left all over. I have tried using rainwater from my water butt for rinsing off but that is full of tiny bits of crap that has washed off the roof etc.

Do i need to spend some money on some sort of water softener to run the hosepipe through which will need regular cartridge changing or is there some sort of additive like a rinse agent you could add to a watering can full of tap water.

Any advice you guys might be able to give would be most appreciated.

Certainly shouldn't need to polish after every wash, should be done every 1-2 months personally.

If you have a decent coating of wax then drying should be painless, I can dry my whole car in about 3 minutes, and there are no drying marks whatsoever. If there are, use a quick detailer spray to wipe them out quickly.

What drying towel do you use?
Have you a recent coat of wax applied?
Do you use a quick detailer?

I wouldn't polish that often you'll eat all your paint away. Use a glaze instead, Chemichal Guys Glossworkz is absolutely brilliant (also helps to hide swirls).

Black cars are a pain in the arse and this is part and parcel of owning one. I don't know much about the water but I remember a friend of mine banging on about somethig similar, it's worth looking into.

Chamois? You are aware this is 2015 AD, not BC? :D

Yes get a plush microfibre, it will help no end. There's plenty of very good ones about, I have the AutoFinesse towel and it's absolutely superb.

A bit of Google will point you to the ones worth buying, some are total crap, like the Meguiars waffle weave one, complete waste of money it was awful.

Get a couple of the blue ones with red edging from Autojoy. About a fiver apiece I think. And they're the same ones you'll pay 8-10 quid for from any other detailing site

Do you have a tumble dryer I your house hold? If so the water that comes out of it is perfect for rinsing down the car and will leave no water marks. It's free to just need somewhere to sort it between car washes.

What a brilliant idea, yes i have a tumble drier that collects water and have two small kids so it is always on. Fantastic, thanks Paddy, will give it a go
