Does the polisher say it is Oscillating or Reciprocal? Oscillating means that it matches the contour of what you are polishing (like a Gillette razor blade) where as the reciprial ones just spin in one point?

The reason I ask is reciprocal ones are more professional and more likely to damage your paintwork if not used correctly.

If it is a reciprocating one read up on techniques and such.

If you want my suggestion for an osculating one then Maguires have just launched one that I have tested and seen good results from!

EDIT: just seen this is orbital, be careful as it could damage your paintwork if not used correctly, I strongly reccomend reading up on techniques before committing.

The above can also be known as different names as per http://www.performancemotorcare.com/blo ... n_orbital/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re the above, it's not quite correct.

The DAS6 (dual action sander 6 inch) is a random orbit/dual action (DA) polisher with a recommended 6" pad and unless your completely and totally incompetent and both blind and can't feel heat then it will be safe to use. The dual action polisher has a slight throw on its orbit and while not exactly 'random' it varies it's coverage so minimises heat build up in one spot.

The one to avoid for a beginner is a orbital or rotary polisher. This simply spins on a fixed axis so it will simply spin on the spot and heat bills up will be a bigger issue.

Hopefully this will explain better:

Professionals will use mainly orbitals and might finish off with a rotary but probably won't need to. Us lesser mortals would leave buffer trails everywhere and cause all sort of other issues. They are however a lot quicker to use and achieve real correction compare to a DA/Random Orbit.

I have the DAS6 pro and it's an excellent machine and easy to use for beginners right to to experts. That kit from Auto Finesse will be a great starter kit and should yield good results with a bit of time and effort.

As for the pads they can last year's if looked after. Don't allow them to get too hot and wash them after each use and you should be fine.

The AF finesse kit is not that good. you're paying scene tax to AF for it.

you'd be better off speccing your own kit with Menzerna FG400 / SF4000 or scholl s3+ and scholl s40.

oem paint on a scirocco is pretty hard and needs quite aggressive compounds to really get it looking how it should.
the other option is to use Microfibre cutting pads which on a DA on vw paint is what i'd recommend.

Professionals tend to use rotaries to cut and DAs to finish, generally it's accepted that finishing/refining is better with a DA as it's less aggressive so if we're being nerdy and scientific - But most will just use either DA's (Rupes or something) or a Rotary. We only use rotaries, we have a DAS6 Pro but haven't touched it for years.
Even on the most tricky delicate paint finishes a rotary with a decent technique and pad/polish compound will finish up nicely.

I wrote a detailing guide (I do it for a living) which covers most of the bases. http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index ... ic=74892.0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
This doesn't cover rotary polishing as the technique / amount of compound / speed / pressure varies. It's more more for dual action polishers

A DAS6 Pro is a perfectly good machine and I started off using one but I don't think the AF Revitalise kit is what it's cracked up to be (like most of the AF product line anyway). That's just my personal opinion :)

Honestly buy the machinie on it's own using discount code DAS6GROUPBUY (i think that's what it is, check on detailing world) and get yourself some MF Cutting pads, Orange Hexlogic, White Hexlogic and Scholl S3+ (or S3 XXL) and S40

Where I work, we are fortunate enough to do anywhere from 2 to 8 cars per week and in 90% of the cases Scholl S3 and S40 get the finish to our high standards. Some cars of course need tweaking, but as an overall go-to polish you can't beat them.

DAS6 Pro here as well, built like a tank.

I use a 5'' plate with 5.5'' discs. It's just the right size.

Do yourself a favour and just get the meguiars microfiber cutting disc and microfibre correction compound. VW factory clearcoat is incredibly hard. I previously tried meguiars 105 and 205 combo with orange and white pads. It did nothing to the paint. I've just used the microfibre to great results:

Regarding what you said about meguiars,
Just got myself a das 6 and also got 105 & 205 after a long search but didn't no if it was my technique or the product ?
It has removed some but not the heavier swirls

as per my post above mate, 105/205 did very little to stock VW paint.

Even the microfibre system in hindsight I could have put more pressure on the first passes before the lighter passes or done more passes but it was tiring enough as it was.

Sorry to say but 105 is a waste of time, get the microfibre system its orders of magnitude easier and better to use.

105 is a pretty good polish to be fair. It's quite old and there is better but some polishes work better on certain paints.
Scholl S3 is a good polish on VAG paint with an orange or yellow hex logic pad or equivalent.
