AIRCON LEAK!?!?!?

Post by Psycho Kirky »

Hi all! I got home today after a 2 n half hour drive, using aircon twice for about 90 mins total and all was nice and cold as normal, i turned it off about 15 mins from home.
When I eventually turned the engine off after letting it cool abit, I could hear a relatively loud sound like gas escaping or a depressurising type sound coming from the front left of the engine bay (as you look from front) which is where some aircon pipes are.
It was working fine during the drive but after driving later on it no longer produces cold air, stays the same temperature.

No warning lights or anything.
I am assuming its a leak and i will try and see if anything is loose or hanging off or just visually not right before I inevitably have to spend MORE money.

Any help would be appreciated, especially as its summer [emoji29]

Cheers, Kirky :D

If said pipes are visible have a look to see if they are chafing, it is common practice for A/C pipes to be routed through tight spaces so it might be worth checking yourself visually before taking it for an A/C leak test (dye is put into the system so the leak can be seen as well as heard)

It is also possible on your journey that a flying object (insect, stone, debris from the road) may have gone through your A/C condensor behind the front bumper.. it is mounted in front of the radiator so will be the first item to be struck if anything makes it through the hex grill on the front bumper.

In either case I'd suggest an A/C vac test and dye test be carried out.
