Rotating tyres on a 200ish bhp diesel

Post by cjl_rocco88 »

I have had my car for two years now and I think the tyres on the back at about 5mm are the same ones that have always been on them, it is a 2010 car and the date on the rear tyres is 2010 also (although they coulda just been old tyres when they were fitted). The front continental sport contacts I fitted last year (approx 10k miles ago) to the front have only 4mm on them now.
Is it worth swapping front to back? The tyres on the back are Pirelli centaur or summit n think they will prob be hard n crap compared to the contis.
What do people think?
It would be nice if these lasted the summer until I put my winter steelies on.
Shall I just swap all four when the fronts need replaced, as I'm thinking it would be nice to have eagle f1s on all four corners!

I was in exactly the same situation old tyres on the back(2009) lots of tread and newer tyres on the front(2012) with less tread. (Was like this when i bought it)
I originally went for two new tyres to put on the back putting the old tyres with lots of tread on the front. Hoping to just wear them down as quickly as i could.
Long story short i got a puncture the next week in the old fronts.
So i had 4 brand new Eagle F1 Asym 2. :D
Sticks to the road like glue now.
Always used to have wheel spin issues with the older tyres when pulling away quickly.
No issues now.

You could put new ones on the back (Safest way) and put the back ones to the front. Then just wheel spin everywhere till they are dead
Or if you have the cash just do all 4.
2010 isn't that old but ask the garage to check they don't have signs of ageing(Cracks etc).

If you don't do many miles 4mm is more then enough to get you to winter!

Its down to what you think at the end of the day

Its always a good idea to have your best tyre on the back for road safety.
Much easier to handle understeer then oversteer in emergency especially in the wet.

Yeah see I've heard that before and it makes complete but I've had them on the back two years and only had one maybe two dodgy moments so might just keep the grippy ones on the front and change all four when I have to. Mine can spin up in third in the dry if I'm drivin like a tit but I'm sure any tyre would unless it's a track tyre or summit. Eagle f1s will get fitted at some point when I have the funds!

I had 4 tyres of the same brand moved the rears to the front and it totally changed the car in a bad way! The grip was crap at the front and the fronts made a sound like a knackered wheel bearing at slow speeds. I put it down to dodgy saw tooth wear when they had been on the rear. I changed all 4 for new ones within the week.

Good to know actually as my rear tyres are worn funny at the back due to the wheel alignment being out...definitely not gonna swap now, al just get four new when the fronts need replaced!
