Rattle at 1100-1200RPM? 170 GT TDI

Hey guys,

Just got my 170 GT TDI on Thursday after writing my BMW 1 Series M Sport off a few weeks ago. Safe to say the Rocco is the best car i have driven yet.. Such a smile machine! The car has a few little issues such as the A/c not getting as cold as it should but i am told by a mechanic friend that it will probably need a switch changing and he's going to get that sorted for me next week!

The only other issue is a rattle that is really noticeable at around 1100/1200rpm.. Its not there when cold and it's not constant either, it just comes and goes when it pleases! The sound is from the passenger side behind the dash/engine?

Any ideas?

It may sound odd, but check your bonnet stay at the bottom end. If it's loose, some insulating tape wrapped around may help. It did the trick for me. Otherwise, check out the various threads on this forum for solutions to other noise sources.

Hi, also check your bonnet catch mine came loose and made a rattle at low speeds, At first I thought something was wrong with the engine.

Cheers for the pointers lads. I will give the engine bay, bonnet latch and stay a look at tomorrow. It's seemed to have stopped for the last two days though. Very strange.

I think it was the bonnet stay stick thing that was the culprit. I have tapped a little card board to the end of it and it seems to have made it a very snug fit in the holder and behold no more rattle.

Yeah I was very happy to have found it to be this. No big costly bill to rectify an issue. Cheers for the advice.
