speedometer that can display both kph and mph

Hi guys,
Nice meeting you. This is my first post.
I have a scirocco model 5/2009.
I have bought it from Germany where I used to work.
In order to make it UK legal I must change the headlamps
and display mph instead of km/h.
The first I know it's easy to accomplish. My problem is with the second requirement.
I am not so sure if using a sticker is legal and I definitely don't want to pay 370£ plus labour(around 100 quid) to change
the "Kombi Instrument cluster". Are you aware of a cheaper and legal solution? Does VW sale speedometers that display both
Km/h and mph?

You could buy a cluster off ebay and have it coded, I have a guy who will code for £100 and I paid £180 for the cluster because I wanted white MFD, but you can get red MFD cluster for under £100.

On my UK spec car there is a km/h display in the MFD. Does your's not have a mph display there? If so doesn't that satisfy the rules?

Unfortunately it is a 2009 model(with the "old" red display) and bought in Munich. The only thing you can change in the MFD is the mpg...

Hi Gazzagood,

My goal is to keep the car no more than a year(max), and then sell the car in Germany. So I don't want to change the cluster. IMHO the best option is to find a speedometer that displays both units.
How difficult is that?..any reliable solution?

Could you not just get one of those road angel things?

They display your speed in mph based on gps.

I have a TomTom GPS(windscreen-mounted) that can display mph.
But is this legal?? If I am stopped by policeman can they accept this as valid display of speed?

Regulation 35(1) Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations Regulation 35(1) Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986

Every motor vehicle shall be fitted with a speedometer which, if the vehicle is first used on or after 1st April 1984, shall be capable of indicating speed in both miles per hour and kilometres per hour, either simultaneously or, by the operation of a switch, separately, unless exempted by paragraphs (2) and (3) of this regulation.

I'm not sure as I've never imported a car but in theory you could just get a sticker made to mark the mph value next to the existing kph value on the speedo scale.

I think that would be acceptable if you can see it in the dark. Maybe wire up an LED.

I know you don't even need a MPH speedo scale to pass an MOT though.

I bought from ebay a used cluster for 55quiud that displays both units but I would be interested in the HUD.

Hi just do a search on eBay for HUD, I think mine cost me about £40 and it plugs into the cars diagnostic port

You can just get the films/foils for a uk dashboard cluster and fit that to your standard eu cluster.

If planning to sell in a year in Germany, i would just stick with the setup you have. Would be more hassel than its worth

I agree with Phil and doubt you would ever have an issue.

The main thing the Police check on foreign cars is if the driver has a valid license and insurance. I was in for 12 years and wouldn't even know what the offense is for no mph on a speedo

Get a whiteboard marker and draw the mph on the plastic cover on the dash!
