Just got my Rocco! Can someone help me update the firmware?

Post by Plyphon »

Hello!

Finally just got my hands on a '59 plate 2.0 TSI DSG. Well happy, it's the tits.

Got the known issue of the radio/satnav/whatever it's called not accepting my SDHC card, I've done some research and it seems it needs a firmware update. I've figured it needs to be burnt to a CD then ran from that, but i'm real confused about a few things.

1: What the radio/satnav/headunit etc called? I've seen the phrase RCD510 thrown around. Anywhere I can verify mine?

2: How do I find my current version number? I tried holding down "setup" for 1 minute and got nothing but the FM/AM/DAB screen.

3: There is mention on the firmware update page that update could wipe the maps if I have a certain version. How can I be sure to avoid that? (I guess from 1, but if I cant find it...)

4: What exact version do I need? Just whatever the latest is?

5: Can anyone sort me out a link for the firmware? There is this link: http://www.my-gti.com/category/referenc ... re-updates" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
But this currently doesn't mean too much to me...

Any clarification greatly appreciated!

Cheers!

show us a picture of your headunit will be easy to tell. I got my software from here when I updated mine 2 weeks ago http://www.my-gti.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I updated for the same reason and I went with version 3980 as my unit is 2008 model and I did not want to go to new and brick it (although mine is RNS 510).

The link you have is right just download the version you want, the higher the numbers the newer the firmware

Edit: on a google of RNS 510 it looks like that. I'll double check tomorrow. So, what link do I need on the my-GTI page, any of them or?

2nd Edit:
http://www.my-gti.com/3931/volkswagen-r ... -3986-3988" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This file I guess,

Can someone explain this one?
http://www.my-gti.com/3125/volkswagen-r ... mware-3xxx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
"Volkswagen RNS 510 Maps POI – New features with firmware 3xxx"

Do I need that too?

Easy tell is RNS has satnav and the RCD doesn't.

The RNS can't be updated via a disc which can be acquired via the web and from what i here is straightforward (let me know how it goes haha).

If you have the RCD this is where things get tricky..... I've heard it can be done, but in honestly I would accept defeat before trying :D

Nice, so mine is an RNS as it has the sat nav:

So, I assume Philjay you mean it "can" be updated and that's a typo!

I'll download and burn the image tonight. Does anyone know what that 2nd link I posted was about? The POI stuff?

POI is points of interest. It's other stuff that shows up on the sat nav. If you ask it for all the restaurants for 10 miles around X that will give you food poisoning it will list the 5 maccie D's and unlucky fried kitten drive thrus in the area. It knows where these are as they are in it's internal list of POI. From the link the way it stores the locations has changed from lat and long to some other method. SQL is a database code, SQLite no doubt some cut down version for use on portable devices. I'd not worry about POIs so long as the maps work.

Thanks Chelspeed, excellently finessed.

I just did the update now. Working excellently.

For anyone in the future who finds this thread:

I followed the guide here:

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index ... ic=23779.0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I used Nero to burn the nrg disc image.

I used this software here:

http://www.my-gti.com/3931/volkswagen-r ... -3986-3988" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And I've not bothered with the POI stuff just yet as I have a smartphone and will just search for stuff like that.

Cheers all!
