Left sidelight LED problem

Post by AxG »

Can't understand the problem with this but it doesn't seem to like LED lights on the left.

I've tried several types of LED's and have just fitted dectanes, tried everything I can think of but the left side won't work.

It works with the standard glass bulb though.

Could anyone help ? Or has anyone had similar issues ?

After driving home I've found new evidence...

The right sidelight works as normal.

The left stays on for about 4 or 5 seconds then goes off.

The numberplate LED's work fine until you start the engine, then they both go out.

So confused right now.

The diagnostics monitors the current in the circuit and if it's not within a specific window the circuit is shut down after 5 secs. LEDs draw less current than normal filament bulbs, hence why you need a resistor in parallel with the LED to draw the correct current. Even Canbus friendly ones with the integrated resistor can be marginal and trigger a fault. This is why it can work sometimes or on some circuits.
You can disable.the diagnostic function with VCDS.

I've just been reading up on this before looking at your reply, that confirms my research anyway thanks !

Now I'll be looking for someone in Cumbria with VCDS!

Left sidelight LED problem

Still doesn't work, been on VCDS today and tried absolutely everything, they only come on for about 5 seconds.

Needs resistors id say, can anyone reccomend any plug and play ones ?

Or tell me what ohm resistors to use ? Not a clue with this electrical black magic

I'm after resistors too I think. My passenger side LED will not light when car first struck up and bulb warning on dash. Turn ignition off and start again and bulb error goes out and led comes on. Sometimes it takes three or four off and on agains before it comes on and is beginning to be a pain so think I need resistors but not sure what to get.

Would fork out for some aftermarket complete light units to look more the the R but from what I have read there are none available that offer 100% reliability and for the price of £70 to £150 that they want for them I really don't think it is worth taking the gamble

I've looked at a thread on a jetta forum and they were having the same problems with dectane headlights with built in drl's.

They said if you have no luck with VCDS try resistors.

At least yours work though, my drivers side works now and again but the left only occasionally flickers on for 5 seconds at start up.

I've ordered these anyway, it's worth a try for £5 -
