Running In

Post by Stu13R »

Any thoughts on how long and how I should run in my new car?

I know they have some dyno time to check they are ok and I heard these days it's common practice not to run it in like a granny.

Unless anyone knows better I planned to drive as normal with varying throttle/rev max, but not go over 6k rev or foot totally to the floor. The usual making sure the oil temp is up first and keeping this up for 1000 miles.

After 1500 - 2000 miles I thought it would be good to do an oil change as well.

What has everyone else done?

I served my time as a motorcycle mechanic for Honda at a dealer that did Honda and triumph brand new bikes. Honda, in the manual says to avoid hard acceleration, redlining and allowing the engine to labour (ie too low a gear) when riding for the first 100km. Honda engines are the pinnacle of Japanese quality assurance though so after first service , 600 miles, could ride how you like. Triumph suggested staggered rev limits for first 1000 miles. However, engines are so good these days they don't really need run in, just common sense stuff like letting the oil heat up which you mentioned. Regards the oil change, just change it when the manufacturer says to do so- probs a year or 10k miles!
