Auto headlights and sidelights (not the usual question)

At the weekend I used VCDS to disable the dipped beam DRL on my 2009 GT.

I went for a drive last night and noticed that the sidelights seem to get activated before the dipped beam. i.e. When it's gloomy, sidelights come on. When it's dark, dipped beam comes on. When it's broad daylight, nothing is on.

Has anyone else noticed this?

It's really hard to Google this because of all the discussion around "why don't my dipped beams turn off"!
