Wastegate or sometching else rattling?

Post by Ajlcomputers »

Just agreed to purchase a scirocco 2.0 tsi, on the test drive I noticed a rattle when accelerating spiritedly between 3 and 4 thousand rpm.

I've listened to the wastegate videos on YouTube but it doesn't sound like that. To me the wastegate issue seems to come in earlier and sounds quite deep and throaty where as the rattle I experienced was more high pitched. Any ideas what this could be?

Was the test drive from a VW dealer? It's hard to get VW to undrstand this issue but with info in this thread it will makes things better, well it did for me. Provide VW with the bullitin number and part number in this thread. There are a few updates so make sure you go though the thread.

Yes - sounds like the common wastegate rattle which is well documented here, although I would say the rattle is around 2000rpm. Easy fix by the dealer, got mine done under warranty in 2012.

That's what makes me think it's something different as it's at a different RPM and the sound from the youtube videos is nothing like what I'm hearing in the car.

This is the youtube video that sounds most like it but it definitely comes in much later at around 3500 RPM and is more of a high pitched rattle I think. Also, it didn't happen with a slow move through the rev range only on a spirited thrash.

The cars with Sawston VW where I've agreed the sale to sort this and some minor body work issues that I wasn't happy with and a couple of people seem to have used them for the wastegate repair so hopefully they'll sort it out before next weekend.
