Rns510 voice commands

Post by john_w »

Hi all, A few weeks after buying my roc I bought an rns510 and installed it with no issues, it didn't even require coding to get the nav up on my red mfd. I'm planning on getting the 9w7 Bluetooth kit so was just looking at some videos on YouTube about how it integrated with the rns. Some of the videos showed the rns taking voice commands, for example "radio" or "media" I didn't know this was possible so I went out to try it on my car! Obviously it doesn't work as now I realise I don't have a mic fitted but it doesn't do anything at all when I press the voice command button, should it? I realise I need a mic for it to be able to hear me but after that will it just work or would I also need some vag vagcom coding to tell it it now has a mic?! I'm assuming the latter as at the minute it does nothing! Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance. John

when I swopped out my rcd-510 for an rns-510, I had to add a harness replacing the original 9w7 bluetooth harness. otherwise it will only function as a mute switch

http://www.ebay.com/itm/WIRING-HARNESS- ... 1201940459" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

the harness connects to the back of the RNS and the bluetooth module under the seat (driver's in my case). The microphone goes into the overhead console

I currently don't have any Bluetooth but I assumed pushing the voice commands button would at least do something anyway?! I have the button in the top right which is an i / speaker symbol. That's the right one isn't it?! Thanks, John

You also have to recode the mute button I think.

I find the voice commands rubbish and an unnecessary distraction. That's personal though, I will be returning my mute switch to its original function

The only reason I'm interested in getting it is to save time when inputting addresses into the navigation. I don't find the input interface all that great but like you that is my personal view. I will have a look tonight at coding. Thanks for your help, John
