Car is new to new to me and is a 2.0TSI '58 plate.
1) Started it up this morning and it was the first time I heard quite a bit of noise from the engine. It was just really loud and revs where at 1.2rpm. Quick google suggests it's normal and part of the autochoke. My mkIv 1.8T Golf had a similar noise but it was due to a blown sump, I'm just worried this is the case again.
2) I have media in but it doesn't appear to support my phone, my freind has said I need the special cable and not just jump it down from USB to microUSB. Is this the case?
3) How do I check what version my maps and firmware is? I've read about holding setup and it'll cycle through menu but the only one is test menu to check the radio strengths.
Thanks for any help.

To answer your first question it will be the secondary air pump that you hear that blows air into the exhaust to keep the emissions down until tje cats get upto operating temperature and compensate for the rich fuel/air mixture on cold start. While the SAI is operating the idle increases to around 1,200rpm. You should also be aware that if the battery voltage drops below a set value the idle soeed automatically increases to aid charging.
Autochoke is a thing of the past. A choke is a constraint in the air intake to increase the fuel air ratio. Modern cars don't have them. On Fuel Injection cars the mixture is controlled at all times by the ECU based on sensor information.
On your 2nd question there is an iPhone specific cable that connects to the MDI. I connect my Android phone via bluetooth but you can connect using a USB to microUSB but it just acts like a USB drive to the headunit with limited functionality.

Re: Picked my new 'rocco yesterday and a few questions...
Thanks, so it's normal.
I think it was explained as autochock on my golf to make me understand, but a common issue was for the pump's seal to go causing it to blow louder.
Reading up it's a Samsung issue, I'm not even getting a "device not reconised message" compared to others so I think it's something I'll need to experiment with.
