MPG 'mprovement' after service - odd

Post by moulin12 »

Hi guys,

My car was given a minor service this week. In addition to an engine oil change, the oil in the 7-sp DSG box was changed from synthetic oil to mineral oil as per requirements for the worldwide recall on these boxes. No other work was undertaken (other than the visual checks and the squirting of all catches with a very fetching blue mist lube to convince you that your car has undergone some kind of makeover). Very oddly, my mpg reading has jumped from around 24.5 to 28.5 (the very large majority of my driving is stop-start local). So why the jump? Something to do with resetting the ECU or possibly applying an update?

M12.

Does seem a bit odd, it may settle back down again to a more 'normal' reading in due course. The DSG recall, is that generic do we know? Reason I ask is that our Polo GTI DSG has not been subject to a recall. I have asked the dealer previously on this who say it is for specific climates only.

Less friction in the new oil? Also had the same with mine after a software flash

Skippy - odd why your Polo has not had a recall for the mineral oil change, since the recall is no longer confined to Australia and China etc. Possibly, the furore of the Australian media has forced VG to ensure that it cannot be blamed for further nasty incidents due to sudden deceleration. Yes, it is generic: the Service Manager at my local VW dealers commented that over recent months he has undertaken the recall measure for 184 VAG cars from the local area alone - from Polos to Skodas I think he said. He added that at £135 a pop the dealer had thus far netted around 25K from the recall, and that the cost of the recall to VAG is likely to run into millions.

Polo_Classic. Yes, I had considered this, a thought that frightens me, given that the oil was supposed to have been changed at each of its two earlier services...

I think it must be that the ECU was flashed/had taken on updates, for whatever reason. Must say, 28 mpg for town driving for a 1.4 160 is more what I expected than 24/25.

Thank you M12, yes it does seem a bit odd, sorry to have digressed from your original topic. Perhaps the recall is for Scirocco only, although as far as I am aware, the 7 speed DSG in the Polo GTI should be more or less identical to that in the Scirocco. I will ask the dealer next service (not due until Dec), but if a recall, I shouldn't need to chase. Thanks again!

When they performed the recall on my MU, they also uploaded a different program into the DSG. Can't say there was any improvement on mine

Well, after yet more local driving over the last two days, treading the usual boards, the long-term mileage is now up to 30.2 mpg. No idea what they did to the ECU/display, but at least these are more like the figures I'd anticipated on buying the car. Have to go back to the dealers for a tyre on Tuesday (dreaded nail in non-repairable place), so will ask.
