retrofit hands free

Post by drgil74 »

Hi all
I have been considering having handsfree retrofitted to my 2009 scirocco ive had few months.
was willing to pay £300-£500 to have a proper vw fully integrated system as its an investment for when selling on.
As a surprise though, my family have taken to vw today and had a system fitted.
Trouble is its a separate system with a separate dash top mounted screen and a big mic on top of door frame.
Apparently vw have said it would have needed a new steering column to integrate the system i would have liked with steering wheel buttons?
Is it possible to have a proper vw system fully integrated and retro fitted, if willing to pay the price?
I just want to get some facts right before i contact vw tomorrow, as system they've fitted is going to be coming out anyway.
have already contacted a local auto comms shop today and he has asked me to take it into him tomorrow to see how vw have done it and what can be done.
Just think the system fitted makes the car look untidy and cheap now.

Cheers in advance for any advice.

You certainly don't need a new steering column. You need the module, a wiring harness and a mic. You also need to be able to do a little VCDS coding and you'd be able to do it.

What headunit do you have? RCD 510 or RNS 510 or RNS 315?

cheers for that.
looking at online pics of the 3 models i would definately say its the rcd510
it has red dot dash display and has multifunction steering wheel already in place.

Are there various models which cam be fitted?
will any affect the multiplay cd adversely?
is this something vw can fit if requested?
or is the stand alone system theyve fitted to my car what all vw dealers do as quick fix?

cheers again for advice.

The fiscon module might be a good option. I hear FISCON goes well with the red dot MFD

cheers for that.
spoke to a local in car comms shop today,
he recommended the fiscon too.
£300 plus £100 fitting + £30 if i want inbuilt mic.
so roughly £430 all in.
vw mcr said they do the bury system or to be fully integrated its
the kenwood multimedia for £1000.
when i spoke to local supplier though he said they stopped using
the kenwood as issues with dab.
They do a multimedia system by Zenith
quoted me £749 for kit + £120 fitting
total £870.
Thats full new head unit though.
He said unless you really new your onions, you
wouldnt be able to tell difference between factory fit and zenith
and zenith comes with 2yr warranty, as opposed to 1yr on fiscon

If you do it yourself it will cost about £120-£150 and i must says its not TOO difficult. The most difficult part is probably running the mic wire along the roof lining and into reading lights section but other than that its really very easy. But yeah hazzydayz are pretty good regarding vw retrofits. Truth is if all you want is integrated bluetooth the same as oem then hazzy dayz or fitting it yourself are the options :)

been to vw today, they basically said its the bury kit or kenwood multimedia.
parts manager has said they have a kenwood 520 thats been on shelf for 12 months and hes willing to sell me that for £700 + vat and fitting
he did say though tgat id be looking at paying £850 all in, so dont know
how hes caluclated it.
when id spoke to local company earlier he said they had stopped fitting the kenwood due to dab issues.
It also seems its been updated to the 525 now.
Lewihoga-
how can i do job myself for £120-£150?
Im confused as the Fiscon is roughly £300 everywhere just to buy?
Again cheers all for your continuing advice.

Basically this is the factory install not fiscon, not anything else. Its a very similar install that the factory would have done if you had of added bt handsfree as an option when purchasing. Post below is what I sent to some lad about a week ago on here! Although I will check ebay auctions for you and update accordingly!
lewihoga wrote:Hi well I bought the stuff ages ago and cant track down the seller but its basically these

Harness + mic included:

Module: this is auction which you may be able to get cheap
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Skoda-Seat ... 1c42fb4309

Also if you want to put module under seat you will need a foam holder which can be bought here:
http://www.carsystems.pl/vw-bluetooth-f ... id313.html

But I personally just put some anti-slip mat around the module and put behind climate control unit.

Hope this helps!

spoke to hazzydayz earlier about vw oem bluetooth as your describing
he said display is through head unit only.
no display through red dot dash display.

I think given the 3 options of:
fiscon fully fitted and integrated with existing head unit for £430 fitted and guaranteed
vw oem parts, roughly £150 no fitting no guarantee
kenwood multimedia for £850 - £1200 depending on model fitted and guaranteed

The fiscon seems most suited to me, as long as its reliable and well fitted.
I dont want to go down the route of ripping out whats already been proessionally installed and start pulling car apart myself, for it all to go horribly wrong.
I still dont understand why vw dont offer the oem fix described above though?

To be honest the above vw parts may only work for white dot matrix didn't realise you had red dot. So perhaps thats why!

Also found out that on red dot matrix with factory fitted MFSW you cannot get handsfree functionality on steering wheel using oem equipment UNLESS you upgrade steering control unit. So yeah thats backs up what VW are saying! Didn't actually know you had red dot lol!

thanks all for advice , lewihoga especially for the effort you've gone to today.
what a top, top forum, great community!
think after alls sunk in i favour the fiscon
purely because it integrates with whats already there and does it well by all accounts - with a nice few little extra touches thrown in.
probably mad to be turning down sat nav for what equates to roughly an additional £420,
but changing to the kenwood DNX 520 would leave me with not only the recently fitted bury hands free to sell, but also a perfectly good rcd510 touch screen cd multichanger to flog also.
gonna give the fellas at carcommunications.co.uk a whirl,
as Imran there has been really helpful and impartial in all ive asked.
Hopefully vw parts manager will be as good as his word and take bury kit back off me,
but im not holding my breath.
Thanks again

on a lighter note, the staff at smith knight fay in Bury
were very helpful today, despite me going in looking like some
gone wrong-
cant be everyday they get someone driving a car away happy with what they've been asked to do - and done one day,
only for somebody else to turn up the next day saying 'what have you done to my car??!'
