Used Car Warranty

Post by Shakeystevo »

Morning all,

I took the plunge and bought a 2010 (60) TSI 160 (DSG with 33k on clock) over the weekend. Very happy with my purchase!

I pick the car up Friday and the garage (Evan Halshaw) gave me a price of £495 for used car warranty cover, which also includes AA breakdown. The cover is for 2 years.

The policy wording looks standard in terms of what's not included I.e. Consumables (battery, brake pads etc)... Couple of odd ones like door hinges and electrical connection blocks...

Just wanted to know if these things are worth it and if anyone opted for it when they bought theirs.

It's nice to have peace of mind but would I just be wasting £495?

Cheers
A

Check what they need for servicing to keep it up. You will often be forced to use main dealers or even the garage you bought it from. Over 2 years the extra cost over an indie dealer may eat into the benefit.

Ask yourself if the warranty supplier are a charity or if they expect to make a profit. If the latter then by definition you will, on average, get less back that you pay for it. It then becomes a gamble, do you feel lucky - don't take it, or do you feel unlucky - take it.

Personally I wouldn't take it but your circumstances may be different. Could you find the cash for an unlikely but possible large repair bill in 18 months time?

get it, i think it's worth it. a replacement clutch will set you back that easy, so it's worth it if even one large thing goes wrong. peace of mind for 500 quid, no brainer, esp on a 4 year old car...

i've had a new intake manifold, clutch, various trim replacement, new petrol flap lock, horn, ignition switch - all covered absolutely free. would have cost me thousands.

how i see it: two years' peace of mind for the cost of two tyres.

Cheers for the comments guys.

Really in two minds here lol.

Car has been fully serviced by VW. Two services from new. So next one due any time really... along with DSG service (?).

They are going to email across a full policy document today so I can take a look. All I have so far is a copy of what's excluded... I'll post a pic when I get a min.

Cheers

yeah, well vw missed a ton of things wrong with mine - sold it to me without even the horn working which is illegal!

obviously depends on the dealer, but mine clearly didn't check it over properly. even came with the previous owners' cds still in it. so if you trust the dealer to do the however-many point inspection, fine. from experience, i don't so the warranty is vital.

my hot tip is to make sure you see the v5, then call the previous owner and ask them about the car's history.

Thanks for the info Easyrider - will certainly be reviewing everything before signing on Friday.

Cant believe they didn't inspect the car! any decent CDs? ;)

Two images attached of what I have so far from them. Sorry for the quality... all I have so far is a photocopied page! I've been assured full documentation today.

mate, it's up to you, just wanted to tell you sometimes warranties are worth their weight in gold, and not to trust the dealer too much. i saw the warranty as part of the purchase price - good luck, let us know what you decide, it's an amazing car regardless and you'll love it!

I would have expected some form of warranty to be included in the deal, quite often it is only 3 months or so with a used vehicle. I would also be expecting the car to be serviced as well, especially as it is due soon.

To be honest I haven't explored the initial warranty as I was intrested in the 2 year one. It's possible I could get a short one if I didn't take the main one. I'll ask the question - thanks for the advice.

They have fitted two new tyres and topped up fluids etc.. but haven't carried out the full service. I did negotiate the price down so I could get that and the DSG done at same time with what I saved.

Thanks for all your advice so far.

I bought a 58 plate 2.0 gt at xmas from VW with Das velt auto all component warranty, i'm hoping when this expires i'll be offered an extended warranty as I also got 2 years free servicing so the car will still have full VW service history. A good warranty can be worth its weight in gold!
However I've learnt from experience, as some time ago I bought a 3 year old Renault 19 16valve with a free 6 month warranty. Just before it expired the warranty company offered me a further 12 months for £150, which I took. 2 weeks later it began to lose coolant from the side of the engine. The car went into the main dealer and the engine was stripped down to find the head gasket was leaking. It was referred back to the warranty company who stated that as it was not a mechanical breakdown it wasn't covered!!
The main dealer wanted £300 and I could collect the car with the engine in bits or pay £650 and they would fit a new head gasket. I opted for the latter and went mental at the warranty company, who refunded the £150 and cancelled the extended warranty. So as long as its worth the paper its printed on go for it!

Thanks for all the advice guys. Opted to ignore the warranty after reading all the conditions.

Decided to use the money for DSG service instead
