Slow speed swish sound(10mph)

Post by selleym »

Hi,
Having a strange issue, have an idea what it is but thought I would see what more knowledgeable people think/have had before.

While driving at low speeds ~10Mph I can hear a faint swish swish swish... sound. I have only noticed it after driving more than 10 mins.

From what I can hear it sounds like one of the brake pads might be rubbing on the rotor?
Anyone else had this or got any other suggestions?
Thanks :D

any ideas? I'm thinking more and more that it could be to do with the brakes! As i heard it was much louder after washing the car when the Rotors(discs) are all rusted.

Sorry but what do you mean by the rotors? Discs?

Id check your rotors first dude. I had simular and it was a trapped stone from a new road surface. I removed it and that was that.

Where abouts was the stone trapped? Would that give enough resistance to make the car pull slightly at motorway speeds? Or do you think its purely a tracking issue?

Really loud this morning in the rain. Is most noticeable after i come off the motorway then straight into the town with slow moving traffic(10/20 mph). Could hear it this morning all the way up to 25 mph which is a first. Guessing due to how loud it was as swish gets fainter as it gets faster.
Seems to completely disappear when the brakes applied. Also seems to fade away sometimes

Defiantly not enough to make the car pull.

This sounds like you have a binding caliper. Or a dislodged pad, I think it would be worth popping into a garage and getting them to have a look. Its not an expensive or bad job.. you could take it off and look yourself if you are feeling competent. I expect, if you drive up and down your road and come to a halt, you will find the disc is bloody hot - due to the binding.

If it is binding it must be very light as i have come back after long drives and specifically checked the disc and it was not noticeably hotter then the others

ah - I didn't read that properly - I would suggest the pulling is simply a tracking issue.

To be honest - go and get it tracked and asked them to check there is nothing going on up front. without seeing the car its hard to guess whats up. I'd still suggested a caliper, or the pads not pulling away from the disc properly.
