Help a newbie with a few questions

Post by Zidious G »

Hello!

I am thinking of buying a Scirocco but I am unsure of a few things. I have heard that the 1.4 TSI has problems with its pistons. I wonder how common this is. Is there a known percentage or something? Also, is it fixed in later models, say 2010-11?

I can get a 2.0 but there aren't many for sale here, but here is one. Which is the better buy:

or

http://www.blocket.se/jonkoping/Volkswa ... ?ca=17&w=3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Basically: A 2009 2.0 with 42.000 km or a 2011 1.4 with about the same milage. Price is almost the same, but I think the white one will lower its price soon.

Thing is, I am not that interested in the extra power the 2.0 offers, I would be fine with the 1.4 but I am afraid it will break down. Is it worth getting an older car for pretty much the same price? Is the 2.0 more reliable? And is it supposed to have that much of a higher price than the 1.4?

Would appreciate some help from the pros! :D

Loads if discussion on this recently. Based on my reading, and personal opinion:

2.0l are more common, a lot more common, and generally are the same price (roughly) as the 1.4 with similar miles. A 2011 1.4 shouldn't have issues, but the 2.0 poses a number of advantages, such as GT specs, power, better gearbox, reliability (even if the 2011 has no known issues, it is still pretty elaborately aspirated which gives more things to go wrong)

If you arnt worried about higher running costs (fuel, insurance) it is a no brainer. Get the 2.0, IMO. I am getting a 2011 1.4 because the running cost of the 2.0 are too high for me, but if I could, I would have the 2.0

Would generally agree with that, but not with the statement on prices, least as far as the UK goes. The 2 litres tend to be around 20%+ more expensive, like for like. Having reviewed on a weekly basis, over the last 6 months, the prices of each in the two to three year range I have confidence in that assertion. Typically, the same money will buy you a two litre that is a year older and with (in cases, appreciably) more miles on the clock. Possibly the situation is different for older cars, out of vw warranty.

In addition, I think one needs to be careful in suggesting that the 1.4 are less reliable simply because of the potential to be less reliable.

True.

And fair enough on the price, I haven't looked too deeply at the 2.0, but from what I have seen same milage between the two were similar prices (but yes, the 1.4 would generally be younger)

But is it a fact that the pistonproblems are solved with the 2011 1.4's, (makingyear 2010) or is it simply so that the problems haven't started to show yet, since they are not that old...? :S
