So I have decided I want a 170 tdi. The used market is flooded with 140s, but 170s seem somewhat a rarity. And the ones I do fine generally have 75k+ miles on them. I'm currently driving a 23 year old petrol dub with 190k on the clock, so I'm by no means scared of high miles, but a 23 year old is a lot cheaper to repair than a modern car.
My question is; would any of you have any major concerns over buying a TDi with this sort of milage, baring in mind I will be adding at least 50k to that in my ownership?
Thanks!

It wouldn't put me off , if the price is right . I own a 2.0 TDI177 and the performance is noticeably better than the TDI140 scirroco's i test drove.
My previous car was a 02 plate Bora with the 1.8 TDi130 motor in it . I bought it with 65k on the clock and sold it with 151k . The engine never missed a beat in 9 years and 85k miles of ownership

I don't think I'd have any concerns either. My only reservation might be if it had a DSG gearbox as I personally don't know the reliability of them with mega miles but with the miles and age you're looking at, these days, it's not a lot really.

Bought our 170 with 105k on the clock and its been fine....obviously make sure service history is complete, but apart from that the only other niggles are the normal stone chips on the front end and the state of the headlights which I have got a kit to remove the scratches from.

Brilliant, thank for the posts.
Takes a bit of worry out. I will be going for the manual, and won't touch anything without full VW SH.

A friend of mine recently sold a 15 year old Golf GTI with 238K on the clock. It's amazing what these cars will do if cared and maintained properly.

Re: High miler - concerns?
I suspect because the 140 landed into the typical company car range, whereas the 170 was to expensive at the time.Waspy wrote:So I have decided I want a 170 tdi. The used market is flooded with 140s, but 170s seem somewhat a rarity.

Even so I still could not sell my mint one on the private market for £16k (it was a 2012 car with 17,000 miles - DSG auto and Deep Black). Advertised for a month - no takers. Then eventually sold to a dealer for £15,800!
