Inconsistant starting issue?

Post by skyservant »

Hi
I have a 09 petrol and recently, say over the last few months my car will fail to start. At first it seemed to do it after every re-fuel for example I would fuel up and maybe 10 miles in I would go to restart and it wouldn't, well it would but only tick over for about 10 seconds then cut out, I would keep trying it and maybe after the 10/12 attempts it would start and I would be on my way again.
When it is ticking over and just before it dies I can rev it up but no matter where it is in the rev range it dies.
But today it did it out of the blue, in fact right in the garage I was about to do a trade in with it :( The only way it would go was if I got it tick over then floor it and it seemed to be ok and it got me home no problem. I have been outside to start it again and no problem and im sure it will start for work in the morning.
There are no error codes showing on the dash, it was fully serviced about 200 miles ago and it is ticking over at 800 RPM.
Any clues anyone?

Update.
I have just had the car round to my MOT garage and he plugged the car into his diagnostics machine-
P0087 / 00135 'fuel rail/system pressure too low.'

Questions I have are-
Is this a common fault?
Does anyone know if it is normally the pressure sensor, tank boost pump, engine driven high pressure pump or other?
Does anyone have a fuel system schematic I can look at or a engine layout diagram so I could have a look?
Or just send it to VW (£85) for a diagnostic report which I would assume is more in-depth to what my garage has just done and should identify the part?

Cheers G

Not heard of this issue before, but just doing a bit of googling seems to point to the HPFP (High Pressure fuel pump) being suspect.

Is your car high mileage?

I'm getting this and the car has only done 23000, I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the ignition barrel
