Slipping clutch?

Post by eMiL-VR6 »

Hey there!

Im having a problem with my car and i belive is the clutch but can't really be sure.
At 2500rpm until 3000 rpm the rpm "rush", just like the clutch is slipping.
But if you slowly increase to 2500rpm and give WOT there is no slip. But if you give WOT at lower rmp's like 2000 this happends at the same time you feel the turbo is giving max.
Which makes me belive there maybe could be something with the turbo? Sometimes it also happends somewere at 4k rpm.
This normally happends on 4th, 5th and 6th gear.

Unfortunately my VCDS doesnt work so i can't make any logs.

Car setup:

Eurojet 3" TBE
Autotech HPFP
Audi RS3 LPFP
Audi RS4 FPV
VF Engineering 3" Intake
GIAC Extreme Tune

Here is a video which shows the problem.

If you look at the curve it should be most pressure on the clucth around 3k rpm.
Should not the clutch start to slip more around 3000rpm then 2500?

Any ideas?

You are getting clutch slip at peak torque given the state of tune, it is only going to get worse so upgraded clutch is required that can cope, you can run an upgraded clutch with stock dmf

My wife is having a clutch next week in her GTI which has done 75k and having a Helix clutch with new oem dmf as a precaution

I'm fed up with clutch wear on mapped cars so I've gone for DSG on my Golf R

As i thought then...
Yeah it's already getting worse, im getting the slip a little bit longer now (the video is a month old).
So i guess the OEM clutch is not that good? If i remember right i think i've been reading a lot of threads about the OEM clutch that couldnt handle more power then stock.

How much power can a DSG car handle? If you put it against one with a manual.

Do you have any clutch to recommend?
I was looking at LOBA's single disc 550nm but then i'll get problem because it is smf.

My wife has been running 300bhp for over 4 years and clutch started slipping at 70k, my Rocco's clutch hosted about 25k

I put a Sachs on in my Rocco with stock dmf

DSG wins as it is not dependant on someone's left and right feet working in harmony

These manual clutches just aren't designed to take the torque the engine / turbo could muster. My GTI's slipped straight away and got worse for 12months, until I took the map off. The slip went away then. The clutch will handle stock power for years and years but it's only a matter of time until it slips with a map.

Something the tuners don't tell you

"After spending £600 on one of our maps, shortly you will have to spend the same again on a clutch"

DSG seems much more robust and really is a must if you want to tune without the hassle of upgrading the clutch

well shortly in this case was 4.5 years and 65,000 miles so a good innings i say, my 35's clutch never showed a hint of slip either

Without the map, the clutch would last double that mileage with ease. These clutches just aren't designed to take the torque and won't do it for long.

It is a good innings for a clutch after stage 1, every car I've ever mapped has slipped quickly after the map and most I've seen on other forums slip after 12mths or so.

It is a given that your clutch life will be shortened but no one tells you that when they are mapping your car :grumpy:

It's a shame as the engine will take the torque for 100's of thousands of miles

Trust me i'm amazed it has lasted that long as Mrs W rides the torque curve rather than use the power, helix is going in on Monday

My R is going to be dsg and i've told Mrs W to go for DSG on a Mk7 as i feel the engine is just going to pump put torque like the rocco/GTI engines

Hehe..
My lasted ca 6000km and now it's terrible!
Lucky me the winter is knocking on the door here in Sweden and the car will get its place in the garage during the winter.

So im thinking about getting the LOBA clutch but to bad it's smf!

I'm of the same opinion that if you plant to tune, DSG FTW!!

The R will put out some decent figures when the tuners have had a play with it

just had a upgraded Helix clutch and new DMF in wife's K04 GTI, bedding in nicely and not much firmer in feel (lighter than the Sachs), also had the Revo Linear Stage 1 map put on Revo HQ and we are back to Go Play mode

Had a few days with the helix and wife loves it saying no real difference to oem and she does a for bet of commuting! all in all £1,000 supply and fitted for clutch kit including DMF from Alex at AKS Tuning

As a comparison she only drove my Rocco once with the Sachs as did not like it

Nice to hear wigit!
How much could the upgraded helix clutch hold?
