Rust Pevention

Post by iforland »

As I'm new to the Scirocco and the car I have is in good condition at the moment I was wondering whether you can get VW to re-apply the internal cavity wax to the underside and box sections of the car and therefore future proof against rust. Has anyone ever had this done?

Is rust a real concern on modern galvanized bodies?

It certainly is on the MK4 and MK5 Golf. VW are paying out a fortune on warranty claims gor tailgates on the former and wings on the latter.

Cuprabob makes a really good point, and if I'm not mistaken the tailgates on Scirocco's can also suffer from rust, mine is showing early signs and I will be talking to dealer about this as I believe it has a 12 year body warranty.

Hopefully you have, nothing worse than a rusty car...

Back on the original subject about cavity wax, my idea is that if it costs £300 its a fairly cheap way to ensure the car remains as rust free as possible for as long as possible, and with the added benefit that it will make the car have a bit more of a "new" car smell. I'll check with the dealer and see if its something they offer and how much it would cost.

try to get some quotes from different bodyshops. I think dealers will be dearer by comparison.

when i wash mine, i often forget or neglected the bits around the tailgate ( the area on the actual body and you can only access it when the tailgate is wide open).

I only realize after that in those areas a lot of wet muck gather and because its not exposure, it never dries at the same rate. left to accumulate i think it will only encourage rust in the long run.

I think its better to prevent rust by cleaning those areas. In the uK with the salt on the road in winter, its a good idea to hose the underside and wheel arches as well.
