Scirocco R - Milltek catback drone
Hi everyone. I was hoping someone could shed some light on a small problem I'm having with my new Milltek cat-back (i think its resonated as i opted for the most quiet)
(I have a DSG rocco - forge twintake - Milltek cat-back - 320bhp)
when in 6th on the motorway, i have no exhaust noise or drone at about 65, but once i get to about 75/85, i get a lot of exhaust drone which really becomes quite loud and irritating after a while.
If i accelerate to over that speed, so about 85/90/95, the exhaust drone goes away.
Is there any fix for this drone as its really starting to get on my tits.
cheers guys

I've just ditched the Akrapovic exhaust for this reason, right at motorway cruising speed it would drone, all other times it was nice and quiet.
I couldn't be doing with it, I was feeling irritated by the time I got to work so I'm now on a standard exhaust with my uprated downpipe, much better.

I went to the Nurburgring last year in a MK5 Golf R32 with a Milltek Non-Res. It was a terrible exhaust, only sounded"sweet" for a small part of the rev range and droned at cruising revs.
Very poor IMHO. Heard a lot of stories of Milltek welds failing too.
BCS exhausts (with powervalve) seem very popular these days and make a great noise

Re: Scirocco R - Milltek catback drone
i've just taken the a full Miltek TBE with the resonated rear off my Ed35 which is same as the Rocco R as it was starting to do my head in and has had to go as my wife may be having the 35 and didn't like it either for similar reasons, welds were fine but some of the flanges had aged a little
if i was going aftermarket again I'd go BCS from price and quality and Nige there does great stuff, next choice would be APR and i'd steer clear of Scorpion having seen some of their handy work within the silencers
the drone experience confounded my thoughts just to buy a more powerful car in the first place and keep it Stage 1

I've gone for an updated cat free down pipe with standard exhaust there after. Nice and quiet unless you give it full beans, in which case it's a nice noise.

Re: Scirocco R - Milltek catback drone
i spoke to Nige a few weeks ago at BCS and they are currently making up a valved exhaust for my R.
Hopefully all issues will be solved but i will keep you all updated once it arrives at the end of this week and I sort out the fitting.

Hey Sam
Glad to hear that you are happy with the Powervalve system - hope we aren't costing you too much in extra fuel as you spend more time behind the wheel... ;-)
Cheers

Nige,
Do you have any photos of the underneath with the system installed, I'm a little confused about the location of the boxes and routing under the car, it doesn't seem to mirror the standard system looking at the selection of pipes and boxes above.
One of these will be winging its way to Dubai soon, just need to get Christmas over with first.

It's the resonated backbox that drones... your setup from the pics is obviously non res.metaljay wrote:I have a milltek Turbo back with Sports CAT and i don't get any drone?
For the record my Milltek resonated setup also drones between 65 and 85 everyday use would be tiring TBH.

The BCS system has a boost triggered valve mate. This means that when your on the motorway or just cruising, for example when im on the motorway at 85, the car is dead silent just like the OEM exhaust. Once you begin to put your foot down the valve will open up and then you will be able to hear that amazing sound.

Re: Scirocco R - Milltek catback drone
Sounds lovely. Wish mine was like that. I burnt over £700 on the cat back, i went for the resonated one (The EC type approved version), as i specifically asked for it to be nice and quiet on the motorway. Unfortunately it was terrible on the motorway and i had some real trouble when driving long distance as i was getting huge headaches.metaljay wrote:I have a milltek Turbo back with Sports CAT and i don't get any drone?

Re: Scirocco R - Milltek catback drone
I'm baffled (pun intended) on these Milltek issues, how can a resonated system, especially the EC approved one cause drone and yet a non resonated system with only an average size middle silencer and nothing but pipe work at the rear not cause any drone.
If this is some sort of resonant frequency caused by the lengths of the pipe inside the silencers then surely Milltek can alter this and cure the issue?
I thought the EC approved system was just that, it met with European noise regulations?
The BCS system is also confusing me, it's the same, an average size centre box with a small straight through silencer forwards of this and yet it's claimed to be quiet?
My Acrapovic system was two rear silencers, one at each side and a straight through silencer to the rear of the down pipe, it still boomed at motorway speed even thought the construction was superb.

On the highway at certain rpm there's a lot of drone.

Re: Scirocco R - Milltek catback drone
It is interesting as chungster had the non res cat back on his R and for me it was too loud and intrusive which why on my 35 I went full the but resonated, I will say how you use the car depends on whether you like or dislike, my 35 is not a daily but a few weeks of using it for motorway stuff and I decided to remove it, my wife hated it (it was removed before I ordered a Golf R), I got my system at a cracking price and for what I paid I have no regrets as my requirements changed
