Scirocco R Build Time & Buying Advice

Post by Brocky »

Hi all.

I'm in the process of ordering my Roc. I should probably say that this is my first time buying brand-new, so this is untrodden territory for me.

I'm going for an R and have presented my local dealer with an Orange Wheels quote that they are willing to match. They are getting back to me with the finance quote today.

However, I just received an e-mail and I'm not too sure on the situation.
This pricing expires December 30th 2014. I am a little conscious it will be have a scirocco R built and registered in this small time scale

Would you consider a car in stock? As this pricing on orange wheels is a target car price discount until December 30th I will check stock in the uk and email it across

In the meantime I am calling Volkswagen UK to find out the lead time on an R it usually is around 6 months for a build
Is there usually a 6 month wait time for an R?

By "Would you consider a car in stock?", does she mean a pre-registered car, or is she talking about changing my mind to maybe an R-Line that they don't have to get built?

Also, I'd have thought that when I pay the deposit, that's me agreeing to the deal and therefore the price at the time....? Or am I wrong and it's actually the time of registration that counts?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

You do realise that Dec 2014 is nearly 15 months away:-)

Depending upon the spec. the lead time is normally somewhere between 3 to 6 months.

The stock car being referred to is probably a pre-registered car but worth considering if they can get one that meets your requirements.

With regards to pricing, I had this issue a few years ago when I ordered an R32 and it took 6 months to arrive. During this period VW increased their prices. The dealer did try to pass the price increase on but I argued and they waived / absorbed them. have a read of the T and Cs on the order form but in most cases their is a clause where they can pass the price increase on.

Yeah, I think that's a typo, tbh.

The spec is pretty standard. Just metallic paint, smoking pack and 19" Taladegas. No sunroof, Dynaudio, cruise control etc.

Awesome, thanks for the advice. I'm getting around 5.5k off with the OW quote. If taking a pre-reg car with my spec means that I get that deal before it expires, then I guess I'll take that.

Just spoken to the dealer and it seems that they have only one R in the UK. It has base spec, which I would be ok with, apart from it only has 18's instead of the 19's that I wanted....and apparently, I would then have to pay full price for the 19's. :(

They also said that I would be looking at 6-8 months to have an R built....and I would also not get the deal I'm expecting, because it expires at the turn of the year.

The alternative is to go for an R-Line....which, to be fair, is what I was originally looking to get, before being tempted to go for the R. The lack of Rising Blue, however, then gives me a colour choice dilemma, lol.

I went through this a while back, 6 months was the quote I had for delivery, but I couldn't get that discount on a new car, I wonder if it was ever achievable in your case either.

Eventually I did find a pre registered one with pretty much al options on, if you want something sooner than 6 months you might just have to forgo a new car experience.

I'll still be getting the new car, but I'll go with my original plan of getting the R-Line, rather than the R. They will still match the Orange Wheels quote. It's just that the quote for the R (which is almost 6k less than list) takes into account 'an end of year discount' (which is obviously given in an attempt to meet yearly targets) which expires on the 1st of Jan. As they can't build and register the car before that, the discount wont apply.

Understandable, I guess.

"In stock" could also mean an unregistered car - ie, perhaps a car that has been specc'd and built, but the customer cancelled the order by the time it arrived. Might be worth considering?

Good luck whichever route you go down though dude, you will not be disappointed with the R :)

That's exactly what the R they have is, I believe. It has minimum spec, but only 18" wheels and is Candy, instead of the Rising that I wanted. The dealer would have to order 19"s from 'Parts' and then I would have to pay full price for them though.

As I said, I was orginally sold on the R-Line and then decided to splurge on the R, on a bit of a whim. So I'd rather go back to that plan, than get a car that isn't spec'd how I like, or wait 8 months and not get the deal I want.

A little disappointed, but it's no biggie. I'll just upgrade when/if the facelift comes around, maybe. :)

Oh and I'll be sure to give you a (slightly jealous) wave if I see you around. I'm a fellow Salfordian. :)

I think a lot of this is VW dealer sales soft-soaping - sure the current 'deal' may well expire at the end of the year - but then it gets replaced by the next 'deal'!

Its simply about whether they are prepared to sell you the car for the price you are willing to buy it at, thats all - everything is sales blutser...

The key is to convince them you are a serious buyer. Demand that your deal is price protected from the point you place the deposit. Take £300 in cash with you and tell the sales person you have the deposit with you (show it to them if you like) and are prepared to sign up to buy there and then (if the deal is the one you want). I have used this method for many years and you will get your way if its humanly possible for them to sell you the car at the price you want - but you in return have to convince them that you will follow through and place the order.

Good luck!

I would always recommend paying the deposit for a car by Credit Card as you get Section 75 protection on the full purchase price, irrespective of how the balance is paid. The chances are you won't need it but every now and again lemons to appear

Thanks for the advice guys.

I'm now at the stage where the dealer is saying that, even if I go for the R-Line, unless I take a stock car (in a colour I don't want) I'm still looking at a registration date after the turn of the year and therefore can't get the deal I'm expecting.

So I've contacted Drive The Deal. They've told me that the price quote will be honoured, even if the registration isn't this year. Hopefully now I'll get a dealer that wants the sale. The one I've been dealing with so far, doesn't seem to, tbh. This should have been the easiest sale she's ever had. I know what I want. I have done my research. I am ok with the payments and I have a deposit. I'm ready to do a deal, ffs! I'd have thought that she'd be doing anything to get me to commit to the sale and then snatch my hand off.

I'll be sure to demand the deal be protected from the point the deposit is placed and use CC to pay the deposit. Great advice. Thanks guys!

I would probably give it one more chance and tell her that you will sign today and pay the deposit if she offers you what you want - if not thats it - you will go dirct to a broker. Then do just that! Nothing wrong with using DtD - you get the deal you want from a VW dealer - you just dont have much control on who that dealer is!

Very sound advice so far - All I have to add is:

- I know your wait might be long, but DON'T Compromise on things you don't want, especially in a new car. Remember, you will be driving it around for a while, and you don't want that "should I, Shouldn't I have" feeling whenever you look at it.
- If the dealer is unyielding, let them know that they have just missed a sale and walk away! In my mind, car dealers should be bending over backwards to satisfy customers.
- If you go for a stock car, try and negotiate maximum discount available! Else, walk away

You can tell I am pretty good at walking away :D

The saga continues...

So, after sending the local dealer a four or five paragraph, very direct and to the point but polite e-mail asking if she would be able to match the price and spec I wanted for the R, and that I would be willing to wait, provided she could match the OW price. I also requested that she provide me with a full quote and details, if this was possible. I also made it clear that, if she could do this and the nuumbers added up, I'd be down the following day to do a deal.

Three days later, I received a two sentence reply telling me that I would be waiting 8 months for a factory build R and that if I sent her my required spec for an R-Line, she'd get back to me with a quote on that. I'd already sent her these details a week ago....so I decided that I'd had enough.

I logged a quote for the R with Drive The Deal and although the quote is around £250 more than the OW one, I didn't care.

DTD called me within an hour, confirmed my request and said they'd be back to me within a couple of days. Two days later they called me and told me that they had a dealer willing to match the deal and that I'd be looking at between 12 & 16 weeks. Result!

I'll be handing over my card details for my deposit payment tomorrow and away we go! Hopefully the ride from here on in with the new dealer is much smoother than it's been so far.

One question; Once I have paid my deposit, if the dealer then comes at me with "Oh, actually, we're looking at 8 months for delivery...", where do I stand? I really can't wait that long for the car....especially considering we may see a facelift in that time....and would rather go for an R-Line with a couple of months lead time, tbh.

Thanks,

B

Finally lol. Seems to me that the dealer had no interest in selling you a car. Just wasting your time. 8 months for a factory order?! They taking the pi$$? Hope it all goes well for you now.

Anyone? I'm looking to call and give deposit details today.

I know, right? I've never known a car dealer who wasn't trying their utmost to get you to do a deal. She'd never answer her work phone or reply to voicemail. I wouldn't hear anything for a few days and then she'd reply, asking for information that I'd already provided her. It's crazy! I think that because she knew I had my heart set on buying, she was just stalling for time so that she could come at me with the "I can't price protect the deal after the turn of the year" approach, so that she could up their profit, tbh. Meh, I dunno.

given the issues and delays people are having with MK7 GTI/GTD orders it is not an exact science with cars taking upto 24 weeks , also some dealers flog cars when they do not have sufficient allocation, the clock starts ticking when VW accept and acknowledge the order, there maybe parts shortages etc

should be deals to be done on the R with facelift coming and the MK7 R coming on the horizon but would appear there seems a niche demand at the moment, the R will also have a thirst for super leaded

on average my last three factory orders have taken 12-14 weeks

VW just don't seem to be actively promoting the rocco at the moment

Brocky - you need to contact DtD and tell the the condition of your order is that its a sub six month waiting time.

By the way - not wishing to alarm you but here are mutterings in another thread that the R has just been withdrawn from VW websites...

Update - Sorry it was you that posted that!! I just checked - yes its gone - the text even refers to the Roc being available in four different models: "Scirrocco (base), GT, GTS and R-Line". No mention of R anywhere.....

Yeah, it was me. I like to do my research before I commit to anything, so I've been devoting a lot of time the last few days, to make sure I've got everything nailed down. That's why I was the first to notice, I guess. :D

So, just as I thought I'd got things moving in the right direction, this comes along...

From what I gather, the facelift is going to be front end related only. A different bumper and LED additions to the headlights. There are also rumblings of a BHP hike....but who knows.

The issue I now face is, if I don't wait, and the new one is much better than the current one and worth the £3k or so extra I'd have had to pay, then I'll wish I would have waited. Especially when I pull up next to a new version at the lights... :(

On the flip-side, if I do wait for the facelift....which could be months away....I definitely won't get anywhere near the deal quoted by DTD now. It's around £5.5k off list price....that's not small change. I reckon I'll be lucky to get £2k discount on the new one. Also, I fell in love with the R as it is now. If I take the risk and wait, and the changes aren't to my taste (ala when they revamped the Impreza with those daft round headlights) then I'll regret not going for it now.

AAARRRGGHH!!
