Help with light problem

Post by Ram91 »

Went to my car this evening, unlocked it and all the lights turned on as normal. Headlights, LED's and DRL's near the fog lights all shinning bright. After a few seconds the LED's and the DRLS near the fog lights on thr left hand side only went out. Headlights remained on and all lights on the right side of the car were all on fine.

Locked the car, all the lights switch off. Unlocked the car and the same thing happened. Could it be a fuse? Or loose wire? I'm not tech savvy at all. Will be taking to VW next week, but any heads up on what you think it could be would be awesome!

This also corresponds with a dashboard light that is indicating something is wrong with the lights.

Cheers,
Ram

First thought is the LED on the LHS. Has it been changed recently for one that is not canbus ready? Secondly LEDs will sometimes go faulty if the electronics attached to them fails. Suggest you take out the LED and see what happens to the lights on LHS. You will still get an error message on the dash but it will allow a check of the headlights/DRLs. Remember that LEDs will only work fitted one way round so take care to get the polarity correct when refitting.

There is a fuse list that RW1 put on here a while ago. Could check for a fuse on the list.

Thanks very much for the reply. Appreciate it, but I have to appologise for my naivety. I'm not the most technical guy. What are LHS lights? Is that DRL's on the bumper?

To add a bit of background to my problem. I purchased the car 2 months ago. Every now and then the DRL on the bumper (left side only) would stop working, but if I turned the car off the on again it would normally
Solve the problem. Now it has deteriorated and both the LED under the headlight and DRL on the bumper (left side only) stop working completely a few seconds after the car has been switched on.

I've not touched the lights in anyway since purchasing. Any thoughts?

still think it might be poor quality LEDs. Only other suggestion is a faulty earth. There are two earthing points under the bonnet on the chassis close to the headlight units. They have a red coloured nut on them and the earth wires, coloured brown, from the lights are clamped down at these points by the nuts. Suggest you check these points are not rusty and nuts are tight.

I would say the LEDs are faulty. Take them out and check to see if any water has got in? Check the connections for rust as mentioned. Some of the cheap LEDs don't last very long. Check the resistor connection to see if its gone or going black. If they are then that's your problem. Mine did and they stopped working and when I checked this was what I saw. That was my footwell lights not sidelights.

Cheers for the response guys.

For anyone that's interested, my lights have started working again. I was washing my car today I was taking it for a post clean drive and they magically came back on.

Still going to have them checked out tomorrow at VW. Must be a loose connection or wiring problem

Be interested in what the dealer found, if anything?
