New Scirocco owner, some quick questions

Post by Data Ghost »

Hi all,

Ive introduced myself in the other forum so I thought Id post a couple of newbie questions here. I have done a search and learned an awful lot so far, but there are always nagging questions I just need clarified:

1) The lights, or more specifically 'auto' mode. After a good read I have learned that I cannot switch of my daytime running/driving lights. I have also read (and tried it) that you can switch the dial to the dipped lights instead which turns off the headlights and just leaves the little ones illuminated on the bumper next to the indicators. So far so good, but then I wondered what the point of the auto mode is? As far as I can tell it serves no purpose whatsoever on a 2010> model? With the dial set to auto the lights are always on and never go out even in daylight. To confuse me even further the 'O' setting on the dial also just seems to have all the lights on! Surely this is the off setting? I know this has been beaten to death but could someone explain each setting in turn :?

2) I am thinking of some basic mods. So far Im looking to get some nice sill protectors (they were standard on my TT and I liked them). I am also interested in DRL's. From searching the forums I can see that there have been a couple of different types and that some people had experienced problems with quality and service. Are the Dectane ones (https://www.dectane.de/product_info.php ... anguage=en" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) the current preferred lights or are there more alternatives? Also are they plug and play with no error codes etc?

Finally if anyone can offer any Scirocco tips for a newbie they would be much appreciated, any cool features that are easily missed for example, because as of right now Im pressing the sport/comfort button a lot :D

Apologies if I am asking the very basics!

1. With the switch turnt to 0 is the same as leaving it in auto. They are on all the time. Only time headlights arnt on is when you switch to sidelights only or if you have acces to vcds. I believe if you have xenon me then turning to 0 turns them off, I'm Not sure

2. A few people have bought aftermarket kits like the dectane and are really happy with them. But there has been a few people who have had problems with these units. I personally would stay clear.

I can highly recommend these door sills. They are fantastic quality and look great. Also much cheaper than oem ones. Loads of members on here have got them and love them .. http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/forum/ ... Door+sills" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Try the search function there is loads of mods that can be done.

I must say I agree with everything whitedevil has said there. Only thing possibly is that if you have MY2010 Roc (built around 2009) then you can in many cases turn off the DRLs and then the lighting controls work as they bloody well should do - details in the handbook. Anything earlier or later than that and you're stuck. Otherwise all that Auto does is to turn on the dash backlighting when it gets dark :rolleyes:

Oh yeh I forgot about that bit , cheers zephyr . You might be lucky and have a my2010. If you want it that bad see if there are any members on here with vagcom in your area and they could do it for you. Also A good tip I found is when you floor it and look in your rear view mirror and see you have left everyone behind. It puts a smile on your face straight away! :)

Yeah with the 'Auto' mode I noticed that the interior lighting is the only thing auto about it :/

I tried the indicator control method suggested in the manual but it didn't seem to do anything. Either I was doing it wrong or mine is a latter model. To be honest I have started using the next click on the dial instead now as the 'auto' mode doesn't actually serve any useful purpose.

I'm also surprised at the power of the 170 engine. Coming from a 225 TT I expected noticeably reduced performance but that really hasn't been the case at all. Really flies for a TDI! (I even like the soundaktor, shhhh!)

That'll be down to the increase in torque

I allways switch the headlight switch to sidelights. think you look like a right prat driving round in the daylight with headlights on. Yeh I think it's sounds really sporty. Love the sound of it.

Yeah driving with the headlights on is just weird. Oh I noticed on closer inspection that the headlights have the VW logo in them. I'm sure the Audi R8 had the same and it would project onto walls etc. Does the same happen with the Scirocco?
