Easy to tell if you have RNS510 A, B or C

Post by robinalex »

I have an early 09 Roc with RNS510 and have been trying to find out which version it is when I came across this old post on another site so thought I would post here as really useful.

BEAR IM MIND THIS IS AN OLD POST SO DOESN'T INCLUDE C OR AFTER UNITS. C HAS A STAR TOP RIGHT CORNER SO IF IT HAS THAT THEN IT IS NOT A OR B.

There are 2 different version of the 510 - A & B. I was told that they used slightly different hardware with the motherboard on the B versions have at least 1 extra chip.

In operation there isn't that much in it. A versions have the volume bar in the middle of the screen, B versions have it at the bottom. B versions remember where you were in a list of directories if you go into, then back out of a directory whereas the A versions didn't. B versions could import destinations saved to the SD card, A versions could not.

A recent firmware release (v1100) for the A units gives them everything that B units could do to the point where if you scan the an A version 510 with firmware v1100 on it it actually identifies itself as a B version.

So in other words it doesn't actually matter. Updating the firmware on an A unit is just a case of burning an image to a CD and loading that CD into the 510 then waiting about an hour.

One important thing to note though - when you update the firmware of an A unit to 1100 it wipes the hard drive so any music and more important navigation maps on there will need to be reloaded so make sure you have the map DVD before you start
.

Now that I know I need to find out what dvd and firmware I need to get 7 digit postcodes. I assume from my research that V9 dvd is only for unit C or later so I am thinking of going for V7 and firmware 1300 as I have a B unit and have no voice control. Could someone confirm that this is correct?

7 digit post code requires I recall firmware fw2720 or newer which doesn't work correctly with rev A units. A rev A unit will on start up think its in Regensburg if firmware newer than fw1120 is installed.

The latest DVD is backwards compatible with every version of the RNS510 produced, but some features such as 7 digit postcodes may not work.

However a 09 vehicle may well have a rev B unit installed as they first surfaced in late 08. The production windows are below, if you know someone with VCDS/Vagcom or post a request for help you may well find somebody that can scan your car and tell you what version unit is installed.

Alternatively if you don't mind paying dealership prices they may be able to tell you if 7 digit postcodes can be made to work and do update plus provide a new map disk. The price is something around £200 for a map disk I recall.
