You need a friendly local forum member with VCDS (Vagcom) who will do it for you - takes about two minutes. Sorry I am not nearer as would have been glad to assist.

PS - To be fair its not really VW (the vehicle designer/manufacturer) who is useless - its the UK dealer in question!

Yeah to be fair it was the dealer I meant, VW themselves are a great company.

Yeah if anyone local can do it I'd be very grateful but if there isn't anyone I'd be tempted to travel to you as it's driving me insane not having steering wheel controls lol

VW cars are really good, but over the years I have found the dealers to be complacent, as the cars sell themselves,
Even when viewing a used phaeton on sale at £29k, while i was sitting in it, the dealer came up to it and raised the price to £34k, amazing!

Thing is with the dealers the software they use is nothing like as user friendly and practical like VAG com which we can buy. They have to conact VW and get the coding for your specific car for the specific task they are trying to do....it takes a long time going backwards and forwards with VW. And often like in this case the coding is never sorted out.

I know this staement doesnt help....but it does help explain why they maybe havnt managed to do the coding for you.
