Exhaust warning light, juddery acceleration 3k rpm +

Post by Babajang »

Hi all,

This morning I have experienced my first problem in my scirocco :(. with a warm engine i put my foot down to get upto speed and at around 3000-3500rpm my car juddered almost like the traction control was kicking in but my wheels were not spinning and the traction control light was not flashing on the dash. when upto speed the exhaust warning lamp came on for 10 seconds or so, and promptly disappeared.

I so i dared to go upto 3500 rpm again in 5th gear where i definitely wouldn't suffer wheel spin and the car felt juddery yet again :(...

After that I kept it below 2k rpm..... bit worried, i have a fault code reader but i cant use it till i get home... 10 miles away. I have read about the problems with the 1.4 engines and missfires but this is a 2.0 litre TSI from 2008.

Can anyone enlighten me... should i see a specialist / dealer asap?

Sounds like one of the coilpacks has given up the ghost.

Yes, get it seen to ASAP as the car will be dumping unburnt fuel into the cat, which is not a good thing.

Sounds like a coil pack to me, I had the same problem with my 2.0tsi. I would advise you change all four coil packs at the same time. Depending upon mileage it might be worth your while changing the plugs as well.

Yes I would change them, I changed mine around 37k miles so I think you have had your money's worth out of them.

Just a quick update, I got it home fine with no juddering. put my OBD2 reader in and scanned for fault codes..... 0 fault codes registered? surely that exhaust warning light would of registered a fault code?

Are the spark plugs an easy change to do at home?

This the Coil Pack Puller Tool T40039.

Or use two crossed over looped tie-wraps but do not lever out using the lower ribs. Pull upwards and in slight curving motion to the rear of the engine. Release each one about 25mm - 30mm and move to the next coil in the same way. Then lift the whole assembly as one away from the cylinder head.

Plugs are 25Nm torque. Plug gap is 1.0mm to 1.1mm. If the insulator isn't clean whitish, chuck'em.

- Spark Plug Part No for all 2.0TSi non R is 101 905 631 H
- Coil Pack for all 2.0TSi non R is 06H 905 115A

If you can do plugs normally, its straight forward once the engine cover is off.

On the way in, just check the 4 packs are fully home first as one could have lifted off a spark plug.

Looks like part number is the same for both 200/210PS variants.

Ok I have fitted the new spark plugs and coils.... with the bonnet open + the plastic cover off the engine I started the car up and it worked fine, but ive noticed a very quite loud tapping noise from the engine, I put the engine cover back on and closed the bonnet to see if it sound normal to how I would normally hear it, It sounded fine I guess.

but has anybody else noticed this tapping noise with under the bonnet with the engine on?

I would imagine the tapping noise is just the camchain running and perfectly normal. You won't have noticed it before and only do so know because you're looking for a problem

Yeah true. I did read they use chains and not belts.

My R32 used a chain and had a distinct tapping noise at lower RPM.
