windscreen de-mister

Post by john_w »

morning all! just a quick question about something thats been playing on my mind! why when you turn the windscreen de-mister on does it turn the air con on? It seems to work a lot faster than on any other car i have owned but i just wandered why this is!? also what happens in winter when the screen is frozen? wont it just be blasted with cold air from the air con making the car even colder? or does it still work with the heater turned up? cheers, john

By default it does turn on the aircon, but you can turn it off if you want.
Yes you can have the aircon on and turn the heater control up to get warm air blowing in. The advantage of this is that the aircon doesn't just cool the air, as when set to cold, but it also removes moisture from the air so that misting on your screen is cleared a lot quicker than with the blower alone. This also means that on those hot muggy days the aircon doesn't just cool the air in the car but it reduces the humidity as well.

As you probably know the mist is caused by humidity and by turning on the aircon it dehumidifies the air and as such demists the window faster.

The water that is taken out the air condenses and exits through a pipe onto the found just behind the engine bay. That is why if you have the aircon on and it's a really hot day when you stop the car there is a puddle under the car.
