Goodyear F1s Tremble

Post by char »

Hi guys,

Got a strange one, I previously had Bridgestone tyres from new and after 20k or so they were bald on the fronts. As the car is a lease car, I dont get much say on replacement tyres and so despite requesting Bridgestone replacements, they fitted F1s.

I do a lot of motorway driving and have noticed a definite tremble on the steering wheel if I push above 70, you dont feel anything in the car itself and the wife doesnt notice anything but you can feel the steering wheel is shaking about 1mm, below 70 no issue at all. Is this normal for these tyres, some kind of design feature to make people drive slower  One of the things I first noticed with the Roc with Bridgestone tyres was you could take it to pretty much any speed and not feel any shake.

Both fronts were replaced at the same time by a mobile tyre vehicle and the tyre pressures are inflated exactly to the spec on the fuel cap.

Cheers

Sounds like balancing to me.

Not normal, get the balancing checked, doesn't need to be far out for you it to be noticeable

Hi mate,

New to the forum - hopefully pick my Scirocco up over the weekend so just been browsing on here.

Think I may be able to help here as this is an issue I have experienced on my last car (Seat Leon FR).

Exactly as you describe, nothing under like 70 but from there upwards (80ish) I experienced the same wheel wobble. Took it in to get the balancing checked, no issues, but as it was on the machine we both noticed the tyre (on one wheel only) looked to not be seated right on the rim, this is hard to explain in words but effectively the tyre was ever so slightly oval shaped / there was a high spot in the tyre - this wasn't the tyre not seated correctly but we believed it to just be a bad tyre mould. I have always used Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetrics for the last few years and have never had any issues, this time I got the new version (Assymetric 2). I didn't however notice this straight away it got gradually worse as the tyre wore to the point where I got it checked out.

This might not be your issue but something to check for, might just be a bad batch of tyres. I swapped front to back and it went away, I assume the inbalance was magnified through the steering.

I was going to get two new fronts for my Scirocco but now might just replace the dunlops or pirelli's now. Although the Assymetrics i regarded as the best!

Hope this helps.
Cheers
