A window issue...

Post by johnjm »

I have recently noticed on my 3 year old 2.0 TSI that sometimes (90% of the time though) the windows do not work for about 15 seconds after I have turned on the ignition. After which everything is in order.

No other issues exist other than this... any reasons? I am suspecting it is battery related as its now winter, and the battery is still the original which makes it three years old... is it possible? I have read of igntions or something being replaced but I have never had (or have) those symptoms.

Did you ever have the Scirocco into the dealers for the software upgrade to the Door Controllers?

If not, low voltage will affect the door controller's operation, one of symptoms is what you describe.
It affects all RED MFD dash dial Sciroccos.

Post up the VCDS Autoscan sections for controllers:
- Address 42: Door Elect, Driver
- Address 52: Door Elect, Pass.

Thanks, I'll scan it after work today and post up. I suspect it's then related to the winter and the fact that the battery is quite old now.

Is there some reference I can show my dealer?

Not looking for errors.

Need to know the Autoscan data for the addresses I posted last night. If you don't understand how to do that easily, then post images of screen shots of your Door Controller screens for 42 Driver Door & 52 Passenger Door.

Yes I wanted to see the software versions (2022) & part numbers. Your Door controllers need updating.

I thought the problem may be associated with the interior lights dimming circuits. The 15 seconds you mention caught my eye and I needed to distiguish between problems. Unfortunately its not specifically the same as the dimmer problem as the interior lights have to only be out for 2 seconds before things start to work, not 15 seconds. Also for the delay to occur, the door controllers that are fitted have to be incorrect ones. The above screen shot part numbers are valid Scirocco part numbers.

So given the VCDS voltage fault codes, car battery is a likely cause but advisable to have the Door controllers software updated.

If you take the battery off and give it a long charge on a charger (not trickle charger that cuts off short of 14 volts) and it dissappears for a while afterwards, that will confirm it. After the charge, leave the battery for 6 hours. The settled voltage should be above 12.30 volts for it to have decent stored charge and be a good battery.

Notes on battery re-connect:

When you connect up, you may find the functions such as windows need to be reset (fully open and then close and then request close again for 3 seconds) and dash clock set-up. Thats expected but check other functions as well.

There may also be a ESP light on perminantly on the dash on reconnection of the battery. Start the Scirocco and drive in a straight line at 15 - 20 kph until it extinguishes. You don't have to set off that way but it must sample a short straight stretch of driving at 15 - 20 kph speed to set up the Steering Angle Sender in Steering Controller. The ESP light will extinguish automatically when the Steering Angle Sender is set-up.

Thanks very much RW1. Could you explain a little more about the interior light dimming circuit? Only once they go out does everything work (or is it only while they are dimming)?

It looks like my dealer must have updated my control modules, I checked another thread of yours and even my DSG part number has an R suffix.
'
Tell me, how could I tell if they have updated the ECU software to the latest one? Do you perhaps have the latest part and software version for this?

Upto and after Interior Lights dimming has completed to zero light output. The Door controllers won't operate correctly for 2 seconds post full dimming. But the door controller has to be an incorrect part.
johnjm wrote:It looks like my dealer must have updated my control modules, I checked another thread of yours and even my DSG part number has an R suffix.
No, I don't think they have. Just found some more information and they are affected by the 7 volt low voltage operation problem leading to window inoperability. Needs an update to 2035 standard. My bad, earlier post edited.
johnjm wrote:Tell me, how could I tell if they have updated the ECU software to the latest one? Do you perhaps have the latest part and software version for this?
Part is the same, software is 2035. TPI 2020170-07
But..... the underlying issue may be the car battery getting old as this software fault occurs with batteries when they are much newer than yours. So I'd still give the battery a full charge and test as previously written above, given your comments about going to the dealers & distance.

Thanks again! Im going to do a scan on my system and post, going to check DSG and Engine software coding to see if I can update with dealer.

I have checked the battery (the indicator is still green) and I tightened the points - it still happens but now much less often. Im 90% certain that its a voltage issue in the winter..

Do you drive short trips of no more than 30 mins in a day?

Batteries "memorise" a level v usage. In winter I have to charge mine as the daily routine is 2 by 6 mile, 30 minute trips, 4 days a week. Had to do this since the Scirocco was 12 months old. Battery is always running at the low level triggering the low voltage audio warning. Charge it every weekend in winter to keep the voltage/charge up. When the voltage is down, my Folding Mirrors don't want to work and will not unfold - Door controllers don't have updated software.

I do drive short periods - this is teh first winter that I have done so...

Is there a Technical Service Bulletin that I can refer my VW dealer to for the door controllers? The car is out of warranty and I would rather not pay for it.

Or, I could buy these:

Trouble with the door controllers, its not a fixed point where the software changeover occurs if you go secondhand.

I have software 1Q0 959 701H/702H with 2116 software but later editions also have the low problem, so buying second hand either "F" or "H" Scirocco controllers is pot luck. Not had the window problem despite it supposedly being present.

There is a software/controller part number match at the latest standard. 1Q0 959 701F/702F goes to 2035 while 1Q0 959 701H/702H controllers go to 2036. "F" is RED coloured MFD of the Mk5 Golf electrics, "H" are the WHITE MFD of the Mk6 Golf electrics. Crossing units may cause the dimmer compatibliity problem described above.

Again, the German Ebay Passat unit may cause the dimmer compatibliity problem described above.

TSB? Above in previous post - 2020170-07

May be better to invest in a intelligent trickle charger, given the short trips. http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/forum/ ... %25#p66497" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/forum/ ... ry+charger" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I have a short wire and plug off my battery to hook up to by the garage. Leave it plugged in on a day off work with the bonnet shut and car locked with the charger inside behind the back of the closed garage door. One of the negatives of low mileage/short trip useage. Had it on my last Mk2 Scirocco, so its not unique to the Mk3. Low maintenance batteries do not charge up fast to avoid gassing.

May be the way to go as once mine is charged, the mirrors behave. The above charger links let you charge while the battery is still connected to the Scirocco.
