Dash Cam anyone?

Post by nemerkh »

Hi guys and yes i am russian originally. was talking to some relatives back there and they were quite surprised we drive here without dash cams. obviously they use it there for insurance purposes and false claims. i have equipped both my cars with dash cams. nothing fancy but i chose the most popular cam they use in russia the dvd 027. basic Chinese made, good looking and fair quality for only 35 quid off ebay. mainly got it obviously for d***h***s, funny road moments and God forbid accidents.
TBH i kinda feel safer driving with a dash cam, i find that i stick to the rules more and i have made up my mind that a dash cam is a MUST in my cars.

Any of you guys have a dash cam? any experience? or anyone having plans to get one?

I intend to get one, had too many close shaves that weren't my fault and would have been difficult to prove if it were actually an accident (as in, probably would have ended up 50:50 in insurers eyes). Just need to think of a nice way to route it. I think I might stick it just under the mirror and use the little mirror conduit/under the lining and round to the side.

It always seemed as a good idea to me. I've seen all these crazy vids from Russia, so I hope I never get to "produce" one of these. But like you said, for fun and cool moments, it would be a neat feature.
I did a quick check on the Italian ebay and most of the things look rather ugly. Some GS8000L was the only that caught my eye.
But how about the picture quality? It would be nice to hear from someone with experience, before buying one.

I've wondered about getting one of these fitted, particularly if it's possible (though I don't think it is) to hand evidence to the police and let them charge dangerous drivers. Traffic police are so rarely on patrol to witness the inconsiderate, and just plain bad, driving that goes on every day, but this could be a good strategy to solve the problem.

Some of these cams are really ugly i agree but some look really cool
With regards to handing evidence to police for dangerous driving i dunno mate, u dont wanna end up overdoing it and just slamming every driver for a simple mistake however unless you were involved in a near miss or have been injured.
As i said all in i think its a good idea.

Not a bad idea considering the amount of people doing flash and hit , or sudden breaking scams. Would be fun naming and shaming lane hoggers!

Although my Roc went a few months ago, I still haunt this place and this particular subject is a hot topic for me.

Someone ploughed into the side of my brand new (1 month old) motor a month ago. I have debated the dash cam on and off for over a year now and this incident has made me take action.

I've bought a E-Prance Mini 0801 off Amazon after ages and ages of reading up on different cams. It is a tiny little HD camera which is hidden quite nicely behind the rear-view mirror, so could potentially be left in the car permanently it not too visible from the outside - which is what I wanted. The review on You Tube (search "Techmoan" for loads of dashcam reviews), you will see it is a fantastic little camera and the quality of footage is superb. Having said that, I haven't used mine yet as I haven't go my car back. I've stuck a 32GB micro-SD card in it, and it permanently records on a loop once the ignition is started.

Money well spent in my book.

With mine, and the same can be done in the Roc, I am planning on plugging it into the boot cigarette lighter and wiring across the headlining to the rear view mirror or, failing that, straight off the fuses and up the pillar.
I can rely on my car, it's my Roc!!!

Can you tell us, approximately how long is this loop?

well for me, i run mine from the figgie lighter straight under the centre console bit underneath the glove box, to the pillar across the headlining and then suctioned the cup just next to the rear view mirror. My cam is a DVR 027 (207 also another name) for 35 quid delivered from hong kong. good russian forum review and widely spread there, decent daytime footage however in low light and night time i wouldn't say its the best. but again during the night in case something happens you can distinguish what is what. i personally haven't hardwired it as i got this cam as a trial and wanna see what i really need from a dash cam, hence when its time to upgrade, ill be getting a proper one and hardwire it for motion detection. its a bit tricky coz most of them come with 5v demand hence best way to do it is connect it to a 5v fuse in the fuse box, hence fiddling with car electrics which isn't a good idea. i tried hardwiring one on my bimmer 5, but had a fault flashing on the dash so i abandoned it.

I have installed one of these too, From memory at 1080 30fps you get about 4 hours on a 32gb card before it loops

I must admit that I thought it was in hours rather than minutes, and this rings a bell. I must have read it somewhere.
