INTERESTING FACT!

Dear Roccoholicks,
I live in Oman (the middle east) and recently bought a Scirocco R-line with all the options listed on my profile. She set me back exactly 21,832 GBP-cash (minus the LLUMAR tint) but including a 5 yr warranty + 3 yrs/45,000kms free service + 3yrs free AAA in the gulf states. Just out of curiosity i decided to get on the VW UK website and configure a Rocco with as many options as my R-line. Starting with a 2.0 TSI 210PS 6spd DSG petrol engine, wheels, paint, upholstery and all the other options. It came up to 31,959 GBP!! I'm guessing cars are highly taxed on your end? Oh and cars are also bought and picked up straight from the showroom here where build dates and customized customer/dealer accessories do not exist.

In Finland, 32 000 GBP would get you a Scirocco 2.0 TSI DSG with little more than the standard options. Scirocco R is not even for sale here (the Golf R is, with prices starting at about 46,500 GBP). After I've paid my car - a 122 PS 1.4 TSI manual with options including Dynaudio, bi-xenons etc. - in full, it will have cost me about 27,500 GBP. So yes, cars are taxed hard in Europe. I think Denmark taxes them the hardest.

That's insane! For exactly 24,529 GBP you get a fully loaded Golf R with DSG and all the options here! That includes 19" talladega rims in gloss black... initially wanted to get the golf R but it was love at first sight when i saw and sat in a rocco. For around 40 K you could get a fully loaded phaeton!

Prices for Phaeton start at about 79,000 GBP (3,0 V6 TDI 176 kW 4MOTION) in Finland... However, direct comparisons aren't really that easy, since the cars are not the only thing that are taxed differently between our two countries. Wages, income taxes, living costs, public health care and education etc., there are probably significant differences in everything, so I can't for example say that I could afford a Golf R if I lived in Oman. In fact, I suspect the differences would add up in a way that would have me looking at cars in the 18,000 - 19,000 GBP price range.

True, well Oman is a tax free country...Would you still get high import taxes in Finland if you were to ship a car from overseas? Cos i know with shipping alone it would still be cheaper then buying a car from your local dealers there..

I've no personal experience on importing cars, but basically yes and I would end up paying almost the same amount for the car. People do import used cars from Central Europe (eg. Germany) and you can save a few thousand euros by doing so (if you know what you're doing). However, if I moved to Oman and lived there for more than 12 months, I could buy a car there and bring it with me tax free - and make a nice profit by selling it.
