RCD 510 Head Unit & Hard Drive

I've had my 'Rocco a couple of months and have been using an old 80GB Maxtor portable hard drive that I had to play MP3s. Annoyingly the hard drive case was about 5mm too big to slot it into the arm rest, but as the hard drive was pretty old and i wasn't going to use it for anything else i took the outer casing off and hey presto it now fits in the slot....

All of this was working fine, the head unit detected the hard drive nice and quickly, playback was almost immediate and remembered both the track, and the position of the track whenever i restarted the engine (even if i'd removed the drive to add extra songs).

I wasn't entirely happy with the setup though, as when taking the drive into the house i had to be careful not to damage it as it didnt have a protective case any more (i'd taped the circuit board and leds down to try and keep it safe) so decided to buy a new portable drive that would fit directly.

I bought the following from ebuyer: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/255433" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; which is a 120GB 2.5" portable drive.

I then copied all the songs on, and it played fine. However now it forgets the track and the position every time i turn off the car... which is a right pain when i'm listing to something by U2 for example and my artists are ordered alphabetically!

Things i've tried:

1) Partitioned the 120GB drive into two smaller ones (the same size as the old HD i have) - plays ok but still forgets
2) Marked the partition as 'active' (by default it and and drive werent but my old HD was) - plays ok but still forgets
3) Tried the cables that i was using with the old drive (was thinking it could be a power issue)

Has anyone else either experienced this, or even better worked out why and fixed it?

Does anyone know how it remembers where the song? I've had a look and it doesnt appear to be writing any files to the drive so i'm guessing it stores the file name of the current song in the head unit's internal memory?

Any help much appreciated!

Failing that - anyone else with a drive bigger that 50GB that actually fits and does remember its position please can you let me know the model number / link so i can buy one!!

Thanks in advance....

** I had to format it and the old drive to FAT32 in order for it to recognise the drive at all, evidently NTFS isn't supported.

I have the same thing with my Ipod, if I leave it for a while, it seems to forget where it was, but if it is only say 2 hours between drives then it is fine! very odd! I am starting to hate ABC's 1980's classic "the look of love" as it is always the first thing it plays!

Hi mate,

I use a Freecom ToughDrive Pro 160 GB External hard drive which remembers the track even after a week. Its in a rubber cover and fits spot on, dont push it down to far otherwise you will have a job getting it back out again!

Format it with this util; http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index. ... format.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

One partition, copy all your music on it.. job done :)

When connected to the RCD510, If you want to change file locations, you sometimes have to press the Scan button and then the Selection button for it to re-read the directory structure but otherwise it works perfectly.

Forgot to mention, it will hold about 15k mp3 tracks at high quality. :)
