The question's not daft reefman. Its the fact that VW build in 2 fog lights but only make one of them work that is daft

Agreed - surely theres a way in vagcom to get it on if the wiring and buld are in situ

Its not in the controller 09 firmware. Barking up a dead end.

thinking about this - do they fit a different controller for non UK market cars? my logic being that on a LH drive car it would need to be NS fog that was operational not OS (as in RH drive) so if they use same controller the control input for either left or right must be there somewhere surely

Just run a wire across your boot from the OS to the NS fog light
Sorted !

Whats the big deal? who cares if there is only one. You hardly ever need to use your fog lights.
You are aware of the legislation regarding their use, arent you?

Does seem a little odd that if the lights there it doesn't work! Think I might run a cable across when the car arrives.
I've just read through the legislation and can't find anything in there about not being allowed to have two rear fog lights. Provided you only use them in reduced visability of course.

nothing wrong with one but personal choice I'd rather have two, maybe I like symetry especially as the other ones there to start with...I've never owned a car with only one and I sure loads of other new cars have two unless VW are ahead of the legislation and like DRLs are one step ahead

Production cost saving. Only need two units, LH & RH. Cheaper than building/holding stock for LH and RH drive cars individually, ie. 4 units. The philosophy of the electrics to to confirgure using firmware in the control unit.
Stupid with two on in bad weather cos you look like you have both brake lights on and the following driver becomes indifferent so when you apply the brakes........ What difference does he see, not enough to react quickly in the pea soup weather being driven in. So you are increasing the risk of a rear shunt.

Good point and something I'd never considered - on that basis if its safety related then I'm happy with one

By legislation i was refereing to the conditions where it is actually legal to use them
Rules 236 of the highway code - MUST NOT means its a LAW
236
You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves.
So, you lot are actually concerned about a second light which you can only legally use when the visibility is less than 100m........!!!!
Yeah, people are really going to be so concerned that your rear fog lights aren't symetrical in those conditions
Also, you only need one legally, on the right hand side, two is fine aswell.

given the amount of muppets who don't know when to use them thank heavens now a days there are tends to be one, rather than the muppets who have two so you can't instantly tell if the are a fog light f#ck wit or wondering why they have they are braking when there is no one in front

Driving home last night I must have passed about 20 cars with their front fogs on! Sooo annoying as I have to drive on lots of non-lit roads around here and it really ruins your night vision! That and people who refuse to turn their main beams to dipped until they're nearly past you. Grrrr.

As I said its personal preference and if you read my later post given its been explained as a safety issue then I'm happy with that - same as DRLs I guess - many dont want them myself included despite being there for safety reasons

Yeah! One fog light all well and good but have you not noticed how many people drive round with only one brake light working.
