Nope not heard anything really! Just heard the 200ps version is damn good engine and turns into a hooligan once remapped - R slayer they say. The 160ps is similar too.
If you look after the car properly then rarely do engines blow up on their own these days.

I know what you mean re: the 160 1.4, someone must be able to answer this chaps' questions.
There have been some problems for some people, with talk of VW pulling the engine from the lineup being a possibility

The twincharged engine is being pulled eventually as i understand it but due to complexity and so cost reasons rather than anything else i believe.

ive only done 4,700 miles! no problems, engine seems to mature more and more everyday
with the tyres correctly pumped up I get 39-42mpg runs
got 39mpg average on a 140mile motorway run!

These engines are all tried and trusted, I don't know of any particular issues with either the 1.4 or 2.0 engines. As long as they are looked after they will go on for years. The burned out pistons must have come from a vehicle that was thrashed to within an inch of its life and not looked after.

i think if the engine is used correctly and fed the fuel stated by the manual, then there should not be any problems.
someone told me that fuel in China is very dirty and not the same as european fuel.
i guess this is an example where something could have gone wrong. we need to examine each case on its own cause.
like for example italian cars - my first car was an M reg 1995? fiat punto ( cute round ones). it ran and ran and the engine was still ok, until my friend who bought it, crushed it and got himself a new car. a lot of people prejudice italian cars but mine was ok.
cannot fault a particular engine without knowing what the owner had done and what other factors were in play.

There have been some timing chain problems with the 1.4 TSI 118 kW and at least the older versions (possibly only the 103 kW and the 125 kW version not available for the Scirocco) have also had issues with unprotected oil lines being to close to heat sources, which has led to clogged oil filters, which in turn has led to broken turbos and even broken engines. The subcontractor for the timing chains has, I believe, been changed at some point and fresh engines should thus have less problems and in 1.4 TSI 118 kW the oil lines should have heat insulation in the proper places. In cold areas there have also been a few issues with condensated water freezing inside the air intake piping (same with TDIs), which have caused the engine to feel weak especially at higher revs.
I haven't heard that the 2.0 TSI would have similar problems, however, and the same goes for the 1.4 TSI 90 kW. Of course there can be individual problem cases, but there's no such thing as a 100% reliable engine (or car, or anything man made for that matter).

Maybe so, but would VW openly admit they're pulling the engine because it is unreliable and costly to fix even if this was the case?
