Footwell Lighting

New car and all that.....

Can anyone explain when and how the footwell lighting should work.

It's turned up to 100% on the convenience thingy. I get a passenger footlight that comes on when the door is unlocked/opened and then stays on all the time until the ignition is turned off. I get sweet fanny adams on the drivers side. Is this correct?

Can't find a great deal of info in the handbook but will have a better look later.

Cheers

Steve

I take it you have checked the bulb in the unit on the underside of the dash? Both sides work together.

Right, now, is it me?

I think I have now sussed out the footwell lighting on the passenger side. All works OK, dimming through the convenience pack etc.

This stays on whilst the ignition is on and does not fade out with the courtesy lights. I assume this is correct?

Now then, should there be a footwell light on the drivers side???? Because, I ain't got one! No light at all, nil, zero, not even fitted. No unit, no lens, no bulb - bugger all.

Whilst doing a routine similar to a Russian teen acrobat on speed I've had me left ear on the brake pedal looking under the dash and, believe me, there ain't no light.

The question therefore is - Should I have a footwell light on the drivers side?

Cheerio!!

Stevie, yes there should be a light! It sounds like they just havent fitted it in the factory. Is there a plastic cut out that looks as if it hasnt been knocked out? I'll bet the wiring is there if you remove the panel above the pedals. Not sure what tools you have or how technical your abilities are, but there are two or three Torx screws to remove and this panel drops down once you give it a pull cos its also got an interference clip holding it up. Once hinged down, you will hopefully find the wiring which goes to your missing light. But on the other hand, if the light aint there, take it to the dealer cos they will need to sort it! I would take a pic for you of where the light should be, but I've done my back in!

Thanks Guys!

The light that RW1's arrow points to aint there. The knock out that Alan mentions is there and it aint knocked out!!!

I have the tools and the ability as I've raced dragsters for years but the idea of a new road car was to spend less time in the workshop !!!! [that was the justification given the purse string holder and she who should be obeyed for buying it in the first place........]

Off to the dealers then!

Cheers for the info fella's, much appreciated.

have a good moan at the dealer, they do a PDI, and obviously didnt do to good a job, and the car goes to wolfsburg for QC and they obviously missed it too, tell them your really worried cos who knows what else is missing or hasnt been properly checked, then screw them for some freebies!! Good luck :D

Wonder if this may be a change made in line with some of the week 45 adjustments.

Unlees they spread th esuite of changes over earlier production car, doesn't look like it............ My Wk43 has the lamp unit. Can't see why they would delete it. Simple production mistake. Hopefully the wiring loom was kitted out and they just forgot to put the unit it

I think it just got missed.

I worked in a car plant for years so I know what they are like!

The glove box was scratched when I picked the car up and the dealer offered to change it without question so it's got to go in for that. I'll get them to sort the drivers footwell light as well. Have been toying with the idea of some front mudflaps which I would have fitted myself. But I'll try and get them to supply & fit as a 'gesture of goodwill'. I have to say that they've been very good so far.

It makes you laugh.....

I took my car in to the dealers and asked them why no footwell light on the drivers side. No one knew if there should or shouldn't be!

The technician took the car into the workshop to see if the wiring was there. As I suspected, it was.

Meanwhile, the salesman and I looked at three other Roc's. A demo, a new one waiting for collection and the sales managers, no less (which came on the same lorry as mine and is the same spec). All have drivers side footwell lights.

I looked at the spec with the salesman, Footwell lights, standard on GT.

Chatting to the salesman, I mentioned that I'd been on the forum and other owners had a light fitted and had sent photo's to prove as much.

So, after 40 minutes of fannying around I launched the million dollar question - 'when will you have the parts so I can bring it in to be put right?'

Answer.......... 'well Sir, we'll have to get on to VW with the chassis number to make sure it's supposed to be fitted.........'

Not often I'm speechless.

[In the interests of remaining a member of this forum, I won't repeat what I said next]

I'm not that bothered at seeing my own feet in the dark but if it should be there........then it should be there.

Laughable but...... I suppose if the original factory "build" is changed, the car's warranty with VW UK is maybe invalidated and the dealer has to stand the cost. A cautious Service Advisor me thinks.

For reference, my car is a build week 46 and I have the footwell light. It can't have been removed as part of the wk45 changes.

Personally I think the problem lies in the fact that no one wants to make a decision. They're all worried that if they get it wrong, and fit a light to a car that shouldn't, they'll get a rollocking!

Spineless!

Why the hell would they remove a footwell light as part of a model revision? The whole point of it is so you can see where you're putting your feet when you get in. I can't beleieve how thick your dealer is being about this!
