Guys just a quick query do you find the Scirocco exhaust gets very black with soot. My exhaust pipe is covered, makes me think the Scirocco is running a little to rich.

Yep mine is always dirty, i give it a quick wipe with metal polish each time i wash the car which brings it back to new.

I do the same! Surely the engine must be running to rich to produce that much soot.

Its perfectly normal. If there was a problem with mixture the exhaust sensors would pick it up.

Kenny has the cheek to call Diesels "sooters" (in another post) and it seems the 2.0TSI is the one with the soot - my 2.0TDI has immaculately clean exhaust pipes - thanks to the DPF.
I really don't think a petrol should have sooty deposits unless it's running rich. Do you do a lot of short journeys, with the engine and exhaust staying (relatively) cold? That could be the problem.

30 miles roung trip to work every day on the motorway! When I compare it to my dads Audi A6 2.7 TDI you can still see the silver lining of his exhaust pipe, not a chance on the Scirocco.

I do hope that the Scirocco (GT 170 PS TDi) does keep the exhaust clean

.....we've had a BMW Series 1 for the last couple of years and the exhaust pipe got dirty

so we really had to change it

You guys have all been conned, you've been sold old PD diesels without DPF's!! You should have gone for CR diesel, no soot at all. Dont know why people buy these poluting old petrol engines nowadays!!

My exhaust is pretty dirty. But then so has every car I had before... Rovers, Vauxhalls, Fords, BMWs, VWs, petrol, diesels seems to make no difference.
Only one without a visibly dirty exhaust was my Mk5 Golf 1.9 105 Diesel - but that was because you couldn't see the exhaust since it was hidden behind the bumper!!

Mine gets very sooty, but I use Stellar Stainless Steel cleaner on it! My R26 was much worse. Because exhausts came out of the bumper rather than below it, bumper would get black water spat all over it when accelerating hard..... which you always would
