Considering a Scirocco

Hows it going fellas, currently a Civic Type R driver but just can't be bothered with the running costs. The drive is lacklustre and I fancy some "fairly" low cost motoring for the next few years.
Saw a White Scirocco outside my house and instantly wanted to get one. It had black alloys, black roof and black side mirrors with a black front grille/bumper. I've been looking for this trim on autotrader, is it called the Black edition or R-line? Not familiar with the VW trims yet!
Also how are Sciroccos for self servicing or doing jobs like break pads/shocks/gear oil etc? Do you need specialist equipment to work on them or the computer?
Lastly w.r.t model years, 09-13 is pre-facelift and 14+ is the facelift models right? Other than the aesthetics are there any major mechanical changes between the two or should I go for any year after 09? I will be getting a 1.4 or 2.0 TSI with a manual gearbox. For example with the Hondas I know 2007-2009 ones had gearbox issues so people tend to avoid them etc.
I should note I have only ever driven Hondas. Never tried a VW before so not sure what I'm getting myself into!
Cheers!
