To buy a R or not?

Hey all,

I've previously driven a GT and a GTS, then when the Roc was discontinued I went to a Merc. I'm now changing jobs so have to get my own car, so looking back at the Roc because its such a great car to drive, held the road so well and I never had any problems with them.

My budget is approx £20k so looking towards a R approx 2yrs old, under 20k miles on the clock. What kind of things should I look out for and what kind of things will need changing in the next few years, because of the expense I want to get at least 5yrs out of it.

Any help appreciated, thanks in advance

I just bought one R and found some problems I was not aware of. My recommendations:
- look for rust, especially on the rear subframe and around it.
- avoid already tuned cars, there is a high chance the car was abused. Or buy one with a known history and a tuning log.
- even if the car seems OK, ask the seller for a longer drive, go to full engine temp (~1h drive) and few WOT and look for smoke on the exhaust.
- ask for how much oil the engine is using between changes or how often he is topping it up.
Even with a compression test, the engine or parts of it might already be worn and the repairs would be expensive.

Good luck.
