Scirocco Central

Looking into buying a 2009 2.0 scirocco gt, read about the issue with the tensioner just wondering roughly how much it would cost to get the updated tensioner fitted? Seen people say £3-400 but also seen People saying close to the £1000 mark

£400 sounds about right to just replace the tensioner at a VAG specialist / indie whereas £1000 is probably at a dealer or may also include replacing the chain as well. Personally I would budget for the worst case and hope it ends up towards the lower figure.

Thanks, went to look at one today where the dealership were convinced it runs on a belt, they also phoned a vw dealership who said same thing. Think ill ignore them and put some money aside just to be safe though.

On the Scirocco the diesels and the R model are belt driven all the rest are chain driven.

The confusion arises because some people think it's the same engine that was fitted to the Golf MK5 GTI because the power output was the same.

Yeah had a feeling that was the case, test drove it and all seemed fine but had no evidence of a tensioner previously being changed.

Currently got 80k on the clock and just been serviced but still unsure whether itd be worth the risk of buying.

Assuming there are no tell tale signs on a cold start, all you can do really is budget to have it changed or if buying from a dealer, make sure there is a good warranty in place, should the worst happen.

Im assuming once the updated tensioner is fitted it should be fine and wont be a need to worry about it much?

Going to pop to the garage next to work tonorrow and get an idea how Much they'd charge to do it, if its a decent price ill be putting a deposit down for it i think

3-400 is the norm.

Depending on the mileage, you may want to do the cam chains at the same time. that would double the cost though

The one im looking at is on 81k, would it be worth doing the cam chains you reckon?

If the timing case is being removed, it would be daft not to to replace the chains and runners too. Oil pump chain should be ok to leave, It often is. The parts aren't that expensive and shouldn't add too much labour time at all. But labour prices will sting in many places.

There is a little gauze filter in there that usually decides to break off and if i remember rightly, it isn't sold separately it is part of the unit its attached to (cant remember name) and was around £120 from VW.

Thats well cheap. most charge 50-60, yeah that will be a huge discount.
