Hoping to benefit from some experience or learned expertise about a confusing and frustrating noise coming from the rear end of my Scirocco. For all the world it sounds like rear wheel bearing noise - so I went ahead and changed both rear hubs. The old ones when they were off, had a fair bit of play in them - so I was confident that silence was about to be restored...but no.

The car drives absolutely fine in every way - except for what still sounds exactly like the rear wheel bearings are noisy...? I'm a bit bewildered - and not sure where to look next. The car has 89,000 miles on it and a full service history. It's shod on Bridgestone Potenza tyres that have only done a couple of thousand miles.

Any shared experience, intel or ideas would be gratefully received.

Could be that one (or both) or your rear tyres are 'stepped' as that can exhibit a similar noise to the drone caused by a faulty bearing.

I know this as I've just replaced both tyres after having VW checked the rear bearings on my car (they found no fault) - the droning noise is now gone.

Feel the tread across the width of each rear tyre - if you can't feel anything obvious on the inner, then swap the front and rear tyres over... If the noise is gone, then the tyres are the problem and you should get your geometry checked too.

As said above, it is most probably the rear tyres. All VAG cars based on this platform are prone to sawtooth / treadstepping wear patterns on the rear tyres which results in rumbling / drone at certain speeds.
