1.4 TSi DSG. For a while now I've noticed a smell of petrol outside the car. Before I start poking around, is there a common problem that could narrow down my time and save drinking time. Thanks in advance!

Have a sniff around the charcoal canister in the engine bay as the petrol tank vents through it. Also check around the fuel filter.

I had that recently and believe it or not, it was simply the fuel cap was not secured properly. What had happened, the little rubber attachment cord for the cap had wrapped around the fuel filler so it was not sitting quite square on. I hope yours is as simple as that.

I had the same, unsurprisingly around the rear right door - with mine the rubber seal on the cap had a split in it. New seal and smell gone completely.

Update for anyone with similar issue. Dropped car into garage today as I have a good relationship with them and they have a lift! Looking from under the car it was obviously the fuel filter at fault. Ordered new one, delivered and fitted within an hour while I sat, drank free coffee and used the free WiFi. All in £40. Simple fix. Some great suggestions to try as I did if you have a similar smell. Can't recommend In And Out garages highly enough. As their advert says, it's how car repair should be!
Thanks all again.

Glad you got it sorted.

By the way the coffee amd WiFi is not free. It's included in the cost of the repair as part of the overheads.

Nothing in life is free on that basis, even the air you breathe :)

You could see it that way.........but it's still the cheapest prices I've found. Take MOTs. I've never paid over £25, it's done while I wait in a nice clean, comfortable lounge drinking cappuccino.
