2.0 TDI, GT, CR, RLine...I'm confused. Please Help.

Hello Everyone. Right noobie here. Always loved the new Scirocco's since they first came out again and have finally managed to get myself in a position to buy one. I've been looking all week while I'm on leave and have a couple of questions if that's ok?

I've got my mind set on the 2.0 GT 170. Had a test drive yesterday. However I've noticed that some places are advertising them as 2.0 TDI CR GT and some as 2.0 TDI GT. I've seen on here that the CR is something to do with the way the fuel is injected into the engine. Are all Scirocco's CR's and it's just the advertisers haven't included the CR in the advert or is there Scirocco's out there that aren't CR's. If there is a difference, should I go for a CR or just the 2.0 TDI GT?

Also does the Scirocco have a cambelt or chain? If it's a cambelt, when should the first change be taking place?

One final thing, any advice on issues that I should be looking out for when going to view?

CR refers to Common Rail. All diesel Sciroccos are Common Rail.

They use a cambelt and VW UK recommend it be changed every 5 years for cars registered after 9/2009 and 4 years for those registered prior to 9/2009. The majority are changed based on time as the mileage limit is circa 140k miles.

Thank Cuprabob. 140K for a camblet change?? That sounds a lot so will take your advice on going by the time based change.

Do you have any advice on things I should be looking out for when viewing the cars?

There is nothing in particular to look out for that I can think of. Only thing is the rear tyres tend to suffer from a sawtooth / treadstepping wear pattern which can cause a rumbling / drone which sounds like a wheel bearing on the way out.

Biggest issue I would imagine is that there are not too many 170s out there for sale.

Cheers mate. Yeh I've noticed that about the 170s. It seems that there's about 1 for every 10 138s advertised. But I'm looking at that as a plus sign in that people generally want to hold onto them. Thanks for the advice :-)

Nah it's just that there were a few less sold:-)

If you refer to the 140PS as 138bhp then the 170PS is 168bhp.

Also the EA189 diesel engine used in the Scirocco is subject to an emissions recall that's currently being done. It's only a software update which they say doesn't affect performance or economy.

Insurance is higher on the TDi 170 than the 140, which matters to some people. But the biggest reason for more 140s in the UK is that the 140 and especially the 140 BlueMotion (there are no 170 BlueMotions) are much cheaper as company cars. As a company car, the 140 has lower purchase price (= lower tax), lower CO2 (= lower multiplier on the price for lower tax again), and lower price also means they're in reach of more people.

In fact, if you are fussy about other options, you might have to accept not getting your ideal engine. When I was looking for my Roc, I wanted leather seats and DSG box, and I was willing to travel 50 miles from home to find one. I'd have liked the 2.0TSi engine, but the only cars I could find with both leather and DSG were TDi 140s, so that's what I've got. It's great.
