Possible thermostat failure

I've noticed over the last couple of days that when I let off the gas and coast the temperature gauge drops just slightly only a couple of degrees I'd say. But if I accelerate or stop and it idles, it quickly goes back upto the 90.
I checked tonight when the engine was hot and the top hose off the radiator was hot and the lower hose was luke warm, so I imagine it's the thermostat.
My local indie is going to have a look tomorrow.
What I'd like to know is, if it's the thermostat should I replace just that or in conjunction with the temperature sender. And as mines a 58 plate with 63k on the clock should I just have done with it and replace the water pump which comes with the thermostat (not sure if temp sender is included too). As I'm not sure if the pumps ever been replaced.
Please discuss...
Thanks
