Suspected Coil Pack Failure, now won't start (NOW FIXED)

HELP!!!!!

On the way home tonight, my car started to misfire just as i was pulling onto my road, so managed to limp it home with the EPC light on (Yellow EPC) and then eventually the Exhaust Gas Warning Lamp started to flash

Anyway, got it onto the driveway, and now it won't start at all

I am suspecting a coilpack failure which gave the misfire, but not sure what has happened next, i have the AA on the way, but thought i'd do as much investigation as i can beforehand

Any ideas???

Need to get codes read to confirm misfire....if on one cylinder it will probably be the coil pack.

It is unusual for it not to start at all with a failing coil pack.

Codes are as follows

P0303 Cylinder misfire cylinder 3

P2293 - Powertrain, Fuel Pressure Regulator 2 performance

Had to have it towed to garage now though, still won't start even after fitting new coil pack, even the AA guy was stumped :(

Looking like a high pressure fuel pump failure, the regulator is integrated into the pump....which could have caused the subsequent misfire.

It's possible other things would have caused this code - low pressure fuel pump under the back seat could have also triggered this code. However i would put more weight on it being the HPFP - check the cam follower for wear when removing the pump.

Ahh, cheers, i will mention that to the garage when they open in the morning

The AA guy did mention something about a second high pressure fuel pump/regulator, or something along those lines anyway

Been at the garage all day, at still not running right...... but it is running

So far they have replaced 2 injectors and 1 coilpack, but it is still misfiring, so they have ordered another coilpack, fingers crossed that sorts it, not looking forward to the bill though :(

Finally got my car back, and fo those interested here was the fault

Apparently one (or possibly 2) of the injectors failed, and when they fail they fail wide open, so were spraying shed loads of fuel in, so much so the spark plug can't ignite it, hence the misfire

Then it appears another one failed in short succession and caused 2 misfires, thats when the engine decided not to even start

This then causes the coil pack to fail fr what ever reason, resulting in 2 injectors, 2 coil packs and a set of plugs being fitted.................. total bill just over £500

Which to be fair i was rather surprised as i was expecting it to be more once i heard what needed replacing, plus the garage had the car for a day and a half, but they only charged me for 3 hours labour, even though they said they probably put in more like 5, and didn't charge for the diagnostics, so i can't say fairer than that

It's just a bit odd for 2 injectors to fail almost simultaneously

Very odd for 2 injectors to fail at the same time, never mind 2 coilpacks as well.

Glad you got it fixed.

Yeah, odd indeed, but from what the mechanic was telling me, the failed injector can cause a coil pack failure, so in a round about way that explains the 2 coil pack failures, but still odd for 2 injector failures

I must admit I can't see how an injector failure would cause a coilpack to fail. The plug will still be sparking, it's just that the fuel won't be igniting.

Me neither, but they replaced one coil pack, which the AA guy had already shown me was faulty, but then had to order a 2nd, which is why they spent a day and half in it as once they had it back together Friday afternoon, it was still misfiring, and they had to order another coil pack

And the saga continues, another injector just went don on the way home from work, no. 1 this time (2 & 3 last time)

Luckily i was only 5 mins from the garage, so they are now going to replace the remaining 2, for the sake of an extra £120 i thought it best to replace no. 4 while they had the engine in bits................. bye bye savings £££££££ :(

Something doesn't seem right with this, multiple injectors don't just fail one by one.....i suppose something nasty could have been in the last batch of fuel, or alternatively something has happened to the fuel filter and its dumping crap into the injectors.
Something must have caused all the injectors to fail suddenly like this, i suspect fuel contamination and as a result i suggest you change the fuel filter under the car whilst it's at the mechanics.

It is possible for continuous misfires to fry an ignition coil - under conditions where the spark plug is not operating properly (like being fouled with fuel), the ignition coil voltage can rise to the point it melts the insulation on the coil and it shorts out. Alternatively if fuel is bridging the spark gap, too much current can flow as the output coil will see a short circuit - again frying either the output coil or the internal switching driver.

Good point, I will certainly mention about the fuel filter, can't see that costing much to replace

Doing a bit more research last night, and posted on a few local VW Facebook groups, and it seems a rather common fault on the 2.0 TSI engines, apparently the injectors are a known fault, and it is recommended to change all 4 if any of them fail

But my garage were unaware of this, and were trying to keep the repair bill down as these injectors are £140 a pop

But hey ho, you live and you learn, but just a heads up for anyone else with the same/similar issue, GET ALL 4 CHANGED ;)
