Sluggish throttle response, rough idle and ecp light
OK so about a month ago maybe a bit less I realised my car was acting a bit strange. The throttle response from idle or coasting along has become very sluggish, I am able to press the peddle a fair way before I get any response from the engine and then it will jerk and start to rev. If I have the car in neutral and rev it will then rev up and down on its own before eventually finding idle again. I've had various occasions of the epc light coming on and the "workshop" warning but this clears after the car is restarted. The fault started as intermittent but is now becoming more regular. I noticed the problem after doing an oil change, when doing the oil change I put too much in and only rectified this after driving the car for 100 miles or so, would this cause a problem? Also on the same day as the oil change and when I first noticed the problem I had just given the car a jet wash. Could anyone point me in the right direction as to what may be the problem? I intend to buy a code reader as soon as I get paid this month but until then are there any checks I can do without one? Thanks in advance, John

You need to read the fault codes to get a definite answer. Some people would probably know from experience. Maybe throttle body sensor?! or you possibly have a misfire .i.e. spark plugs OR coilpack

I've had coil pack and spark plug trouble before and it doesn't feel anything like that. Like you say I will have to check the codes, just thought someone might have an idea.

My guess would be MAF or possibly Coolant Temp Sensor but as said already first step is reading the fault codes.

It's the older 200hp 2.0 tsi engine. Before I set off to work tonight I revved it and it took a while to settle back down again so the issue was still there. I filled up with v power on the way and haven't had an issue since leaving the petrol station. I have also just cleaned the MAF, again after putting everything back together it all still seems ok. I'm pretty sure this will be a coincidence and the problem will reoccur as it has been intermittent but will see how the journey home goes!
