Buying second hand - variants

Hi All,

Agreed a price to sell my Z4 so stepping up the search for a new Scirocco.

Getting a bit bogged down and confused with the variants on offer, with various BHP figures being quoted on autotrader for seemingly the same car.

Can anyone confirm the engine variants available?

IE: Am I right in thinking there's two versions of the 1.4 petrol available with different performance figures? Then there's a 2.0 petrol and a 2.0 diesel? Is that right? Or a couple of versions of the 2l Diesel?

Then GT trim available on them all?

Cheers for your help,
A confused newbie

Hello mate, there are various engines available and sadly has been made a little more confusing by the facelift rocs but I wont go into them here.

you've got a 1.4 tsi with a 122hp and 160hp. You've got the 2.0 tsi which is 197hp pre 59 and 211hp after. These tend to be GTs or is Rline has the 211. Youve also got the R which is 2.0 tfsi and 265hp.

Diesel options are both 2.0 tdi available in 140hp or 170hp. These are available in GT or Rline.

Brilliant, thanks for your help philjay.

Probably be a 170 2.0 TDI i'll be after, need something frugal enough for lots of motorway driving but coming from a 3.0 Z4 I don't want to lose too much power. Plus I've read a few scare stories about the 1.4 engine?

I presume the 2.0 TSI's though better performance are considerably less frugal and more costly to run?

How's the 160 1.4 tsi compare to the 170 2.0 tdi?

Thanks :)

PS: Is there no marketplace on here? I much prefer buying second hand cars from enthusiast forums where you know they've been cared for and can view the history.

After enough posts there is a buy sell thread. What mpg did you get from the z4?

Got it, cheers!

About 30mpg average, up to 35-40 on a slow and steady long commute, down to 20-25 in town, down to 15 on a very spirited winding road drive.

Sounds like a diesel you need then. The r line are good specs. Come with leather sat nav blu tooth 19 wheels body kit as standard

Perfect, I presume the 170bhp is a big step up from the 140?

Aii leather and satnav are big desirables, though I believe it's not too hard to swap out the headunit for a nav system if it doesn't already have it?

I wouldn't even consider the 1.4 TSI (160) considering the number of issues there have been with it.

The 170 TDI is a very good compromise between performance amd economy.

Sorry, I meant from the two variants of the TDI. Is the 170bhp TDI a big step up from the 140bhp TDI.

I haven't tried the 140bhp but as they both produce the same torque I would imagine in real world driving there isn't actually much difference. 170 does have bigger brakes.

140s are plentiful second hand whereas 170s are a bit rarer.

As per usual I agree with the great bob!

1.4 tsi I wouldn't touch with a barge pole. Lots of problems and recently I have seen a lot of members on here complaining about there 1.4.

The 170 is a good strong engine. Plenty of power when you need it. And good mpg. Remap it like I have and you should be running around 205. With even more torque

Really? I've been narrowing my search to the 170s thinking that the power of the 140 wouldn't quite cut it.

The 170 also has a bigger turbo.
I would imagine you could feel the difference.
The 140bhp has 236lbft of torque
The 170 has 258lbft

So a little bit of difference in the torque.

But a 170 remapped has between 298 and 318lbft torque which is a lot .

My opinion if getting a diesel get the 170. More power and would be worth more come resale. Also 200bhp is withen reach just from a map.

September 2012 onward gt models come with leather ,sat navigation and dab radio as standard so gt is decent. R line is the same but you get a body kit to.

Yep this.

I drove the 140 TDI and 170 TDI ... The 170 feels much quicker is standard form and a remap absolutely transforms it further ... Mine with remap averages 55mpg to and from work, yet is 200bhp and 310lbft.

I wouldn't touch a 1.4 with a barge pole.
