Flapper mod - How to

There are two ways of carrying out this mod. One is to disconnect the hose completely and seal both ends with something the other is detailed here.

Tools needed:

Jack
Axle Stand
Cable ties

Follow this guide to jack up the rear near side wheel:

http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/forum/ ... king+point" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There is the location of the hose which i used:

I used two cable ties one larger and the other smaller to get the seal shown below:

It's louder on tick over and half throttle though all the gears but no change higher up the rev range as you would of guessed. Takes about two minutes to do and is easily reversible. Very easy to do someone which doesnt have a good knowlege of cars could carry this out with a jack and axle stands (I would never use the jack supplied with the car). No error codes logged on VDCS.

I will get a picture under the car tomorrow and do a little write up. Simple enough to do!

Forgive me for being thick but what is this hose and why does it change the exhaust note when restricted?

The hose is a vacuum hose that controls an exhaust flap on one of the tailpipes of the R exhaust. Under normal opeation, at low revs the flap is closed and reduces the exhaust noise. At higher revs the flap is opened.

By removing the vacuum hose the flap is permantly open so the exhaust noise is increased at lower revs. The vacuum hose needs sealed to prevent is sucking up dirt.

It's better to block it off or seal it indeed. If the hose ruptures because of this sharp bend you have nice problem with all the solenoïds that use vacuum.

Does the 2.0 TSI not have this then?

Can the plug not be unplugged and then taped up, like with the G7R?

As I understand it the G7R is an electrical actuator to control the valve whereas the Scirocco uses a vacuum operated actuator to control the valve.

Just gonna ask about this and found this thread haha. I've just fitted the oem back box to my R as it came with uprated exhaust.

I gather it is supposed to run out of the right hand pipe on idle and under low revs, and open up the left under load correct?

I've also heard that by doing this mod it can slightly harm performance - anyone shed any light on this rumour too?

Given on mine the right hand tip soots up much more than the left I'd say that was correct

Nice one - i'll probably give this a mod a shot at some point. seeing the smoke come out of one tip on cold start just seems odd haha

@philjay92 Supposingly you lose some low end torque, theres never been any solid evidence on this though.

No

Is there a known method of doing the flapper mod for the 2.0 TSi?

Only the R has an exhaust valve. There is not one fitted to the 2.0 TSI therefore nothing to mod.

Hi All
Another potential way to do this "mod" would be to disconnect (and block) the vacuum hose at the front
Does anyone know where the rubber vacuum hose that Matyfitz cable tied at the back connects at the front ??

If there are numerous vacuum operated gizzmos there will probably be a vacuum manifold somewhere near the engine
Would save having to remove wheel and work under car - assuming that half the engine doesn't have to be removed to get to it
